The Civilization VI "Summer Update" for Linux will not feature cross-platform multiplayer

That makes sense. So I take it it's the sort of thing that you coordinate with your friends instead of playing against strangers?

I've never understood Civ being a multiplayer game. A single game typically runs me 20+ hours and that's without having to wait for anybody else to take their turn. Is multiplayer faster somehow or do people really sit there without sleep for days on end to play?

Thanks, slaapliedje!

I will slap it on my wishlist and wait for a big sale. It looks intriguing enough, but maybe they should have done an old school isometric instead of trying for an Elder Scrolls style. That animation is going to be hard for most people to overlook.

Interesting. Thank you.

Not sure if this is a game for me or not. I love pen and paper RPGs, and I love in-depth character creation. But, on the other hand, I prefer games like Baldur's Gate or Arcanum, over games like the old Might & Magic series and it sounds like this might be closer to the latter.

Never played, or even heard of, the original series. What is a "hardcore rpg?" What sort of games would you compare it to? The trailer doesn't give much indication of what the game really is.

@gabber

Yeah, they could do that but both HBS and Paradox have a pretty solid record of supporting Linux so it seems unlikely.

60 hours total.

And I am the opposite of you, I don't see the appeal in short roguelikes. For me, the single most important aspect of a game is the story. If I don't love the story, I won't love the game. Hitman was a fun game and one of the most satisfying shooters I have played in a while, but the story was blah so I will likely not buy Season 2. Oxenfree had clunky mechanics and most of the game was either trying awkwardly to walk or scrolling, but the writing was awesome so I will play through every possible ending.

Sunless Sea had gorgeous writing. Possibly the best writing since Planescape: Torment, imo.

Of course the meta-progression is all in your head. The meta-progression is knowledge-based and knowledge lives in your head. Lol

It's true that you carry little, if anything, over when you start a new heir, but you now know what options not to choose next time, or what items you need to gather before making a certain trip. It's the gamification of "what DOES kill me, makes me stronger." And it's the relative lack of randomness that creates this meta-progression.

I finished the game in about 60 hours without saving at all so I could get that achievement. It felt great once I realized that Captain Moogie actually had a shot at not dying the same horrible watery death that claimed the last dozen or so of his ancestors.

Darkest Dungeon was a game I loved originally, and I don't normally go for hard games. I loved everything about the game right up until my best team got 100% killed in like the second room of the titular dungeon. Then I realized that I had zero interest in sinking another 10 or so hours in to get my B-Team up to snuff only to wipe out before the boss again.

Sunless Sea, on the other hand, even when bad shit happened, I still felt like I was making progress. Even if that progress was just "Well, I should never say that again!" I learned something every time so even though the game was just as brutal, at no point did I feel like I had wasted my time.
