Very fair points for the both of you. It occurred to me just a while ago, at a lower price point, it could also make a decent "first computer" for a kid. It's kinda in the sweet spot of being pretty capable and pretty cheap, it would probably be a one time purchase for the majority of their education.

I'm kinda curious if the use case for systems like this? Without a dedicated GPU, gaming seems like a stretch? But its way overkill for streaming? Non/lite-gaming desktop use maybe?
So what would you use it for? I'm genuinely curious ( I appear to be lacking in the creativity department today)
Quoting: gaboverstaOnce again it's time for my favourite game: Configuring systems I won't buy.
Also great to see continued preinstall efforts.

I'm all for donations and being able to support various developers, but when I hear "subscription" I think something more commercial (especially since it's mentioned above in addition to recurring donations). And when I think commerical payments, I'm expecting commercial level support... That seems like a pretty high expectation for a dev from a consumer.
Valve tricks Dota 2 cheaters and then bans 40,000 of them

Prepaid cards, gift cards, etc... Changing payment info is trivial. Limiting payment options removes a large chunk of the player base (not everyone everywhere has access to credit cards).
Not to mention this game is free, so no payment is needed in the first place.

Quoting: tuxermanQuoting: GuestDota is free so all 40 thousands cheaters came back the same day on new account. In the old days punkbuster was giving hardware bans instead. Wikipedia says hardware GUID can be spoofed so it might be the reason why it's not in use anymore. I don't think this ban wave will change anything.
You could use payment info as a "hardware" ID instead. People spoofing credit cards have much bigger problems than being beaten in video games.

So... The game is good then?
The new System Shock remake demo runs surprisingly well on Steam Deck

Agreed, and with the 30 year old game it was, the awkward and forced combat weren't exactly great (so much wild swinging of the pipe). Hopefully, on a modern remake, they can fix one of those.

Quoting: whizseQuoteThe combat, especially melee, felt quite poor and hard to judge when you're going to actually hit something. The original System Shock have the same problem. Not a feature I personally would preserve but I don't work at Nightdive...

I remember playing this when it came out. I think I own the whole series from GOG. It was hard af for me (granted I was like 12 when I played it). But it was fun, I have to play the others still.

That's good to know. My laptop is getting near the 10yr mark, this might be a nice replacement!
That's a good point. I've tried the remote streaming from my desktop to the TV, and I've lamented before, but it's just inferior to the Switch. There's just too many hurdles and inconveniences. Glad to see the Deck solves some of them!

Quoting: CatKillerIt's a lot better than gaming on a laptop. Like, a hell of a lot better

Quoting: nullzeroBottom line, I was many times almost jumping to get a switch to play (and buy again) some indies. Then I actually switched ideas (pun intended) and got a ryzen mini pc with steamOS (Chimera) on the TV to leverage the humble bundle gaming backlog. When Steam Deck appeared I instantly got it once I heard about it since it was best of both worlds, and to my surprise I can play AAA games on it, and they look good!! It blew away all expectations.

Agreed!! I was pretty skeptical of how well it would do, but it seems to be getting better every day. I'm not 100% convinced I want one though. I get the fun and confidence of it replacing a laptop for less demanding games, but what is your all's thoughts on the more "cinematic" route of games? I'm thinking some FPS's or stuff like The Witcher or Cp2077. Does it have the same feel as playing it on a nice monitor and nice sound?
I think the thing keeing it from being a Switch killer is, ironically, Steam. At it's core, steam was never designed for mobile or couch gaming for more than one user. Switch's profile system is dead simple to use (my illiterate children figured it out), with separate save games, drop in local multiplayer, etc.
Hopefully, that's something coming soon.

Quoting: ArehandoroSteam Deck is the best gaming device since the Nintendo Switch. It is not shy of things to fix and improve, but as a first iteration, is more than I was expecting.
