Unity to 'merge' with ironSource with a buzzword salad press release

They way I read it, this is for the dev to choose. It doesn't make sense to force ads (force the dev to make money?). And I doubt they are adding ads to their products. That doesn't make sense to me either. It seems like they are adding more ad integration (is that the right word?) options.

Quoting: emphyQuoting: denyasisI read the release, is there really that big of a market of devs that want to put more ads in games? Cause they seem really into making that a possibility for devs.
The question is: are ads going to be forced into the free license, or even some of the paid ones?
We could run into the situation that the end-user pays for a game and gets served ads because the dev doesn't have a financially viable option to prevent it.

I suppose, I don't use the numpad that often. And I'm sure there's market research that these companies use.
But... I like having it when I need it...
I guess I could buy a numpad accessory with some cool features to go with it.

GPD talk about 'cooperating' with Valve for SteamOS on their devices

Makes sense. I would beleive the Deck doesn't likely turn a huge, if any profit. The money is in game sales. More devices with SteamOS leads to more sales on steam.

Quoting: MrowlLet's forget about GPD for a moment, if this is true, then the bigger story here is that Valve are reaching out to other Handheld Gaming PC companies to ship their devices with Steam OS. This would confirm that Valve doesn't consider these devices to be competition, as they help drive Steam OS adoption.

ARK: Survival Evolved switches away from Linux Native to use Proton
12 July 2022 at 2:58 am UTC
Correct, but that's a minority of people. Most will use it via Steam. It appeals to convenience and does it well. That's the point.

Quoting: randylQuoting: denyasisNot at all. Steam makes it easy to use, but it isn't a requirement to use Proton at all.Quoting: GuestThey've pushed Proton to the point of it effectively becoming middleware.
Isn't that the point for Valve? It ties Linux to the Steam ecosystem garunteeing sales income.
It's a genius move.

What's support? Like what do we mean by that? People throw the word around and I'm not sure everyone's talking about the same thing. Is "support" a native release (regardless of quality or availability of future patches)? Is it updating the game to work with Proton/wine but only having a Windows version? Is it just sending out patches over time and hoping Valve keeps proton updated?
To me, support means a games works and future issues may be addressed. Wether it not it uses a translation layer doesn't really matter to me.

Quoting: ElectricPrismI exchange money for support. In other words -- money in exchange for expecting my product to work.

Inspired by Hollow Knight the grim fantasy game Crowsworn has a new trailer

Yassss.
I think I can see a little bit of hollow knight in there. The color palette seems kinda like a few of Hollow Knights levels. But I also get a very a much more Anime vibe, which I like.

Yes. It's all but necessary for multiplayer. Or at least I can't think of a way to do multiplayer without standing up the Switch.
That use case don't make a ton of sense for the Deck? The controllers don't come off, so you'd have to buy/bring 2 extra controllers that Valve doesn't make instead of one controller that Valve doesn't make, lol.
But standing it up does make perfect sense for a dock to me. One might want the comfort/use of a mouse and keyboard, but not have access to monitor.

Quoting: areamanplaysgameI'm not sure I really understand the point of the "dock" so much. The hub makes perfect sense, but standing the Deck up doesn't seem all that useful. Does anybody use/ plan to use it this way? I've never used my Switch standing up either - it's either handheld or docked and displaying on my TV.

Thank you for moderating this. I agree no one is going to change their mind on this from this conversation alone, but the cumulative effect of these conversations all over do have an impact as does seeing people who are (likely) not affected at all by this standing up for those that are; it can mean a lot for others in this community.
Thank you again for moderating it.

Debate?? This is just people spewing opinion. No-one is going to change minds on this stuff. Not only isn't this place to do it, I know that words won't change people's blinkered opinions on this stuff.
I mean, half the replies I started reading, thought "christ on a stick", skimmed the rest for personal attacks, then tried to forget. Everyone who has access to this site... they're all (myself included) so unbelievably privileged, we have no right to voice our opinions on this subject. We lack the context and (hopefully) life experience of being able to contribute to this "debate".
