Setting a primary monitor for launching games in a dual monitor rig
20 September 2017 at 8:28 pm UTC

Quoting: tmtvlWell, you're assuming the application doesn't capture the mouse and doesn't behave weirdly when moved between monitors.
Well, I'm assuming Alt+Tab is a thing (are there desktops where it's not?), but point taken about potential weird behavior when moving between windows.

Setting a primary monitor for launching games in a dual monitor rig

Serious question: is right-clicking the game icon in the task bar and selecting "Move to the other monitor" not a feature on most desktops? I mean, it takes all of 5 seconds in Cinnamon. I agree it should be easier to set a primary monitor and have it stick, but it's just such a non-issue to me. (Though I'll concede that it's possible it's less of an issue for me because I have two identical monitors, so I don't really care where a game pops up. I could see it being a problem if you have a bigger/better monitor you want to play games on and smaller/worse secondary one for other things.)

Protect your Sheep in 'Operation Sheep Defense', a fast-paced Tower Defense game that's actually good
18 September 2017 at 7:08 pm UTC

QuoteInstead of enemies simply getting from A to B and harming you if they reach B, they have to pick up the sheep and take them to their exit point.
QuoteLevels don't always have a fully pre-defined path for enemies.
QuoteWhat makes it more amusing, is that your sheep will actually attempt to walk back to their original place, if you manage to destroy the unit that captured them. This gives you a chance to protect them, but it also gives the enemy another chance to recapture them away from your main area. A simple, yet very clever idea for such a game.
Those three things are also core features of the excellent tower defense games Defense Grid & Defense Grid 2, only you're protecting your energy cores from aliens. I wonder if they provided inspiration for this game? If you like it you might enjoy them, though only the second one is on Linux.

The beautiful space combat game 'EVERSPACE' finally lands on Linux in an unofficial form

I'm seeing a lot of comparisons to FTL: Faster Than Light in the reviews, a game I seriously enjoy (Steam says 358 hours ). I'll definitely check out some gameplay videos, it looks really beautiful. It's definitely on the wishlist at the very least.

(Also that "Plays best with [picture of stylized keyboard + mouse]" on the Steam page is reassuring to see for someone who's never mastered a controller. :) )

Parkitect, the game that lets you build a theme park has come a long way

One cool thing the devs of Parkitect did it the ability to save ride blueprints of coasters for reuse or sharing with other people as simple .png files with a cool twist: storing the data for the ride in the color data of the image itself.

I played the demo for a few hours and moderately enjoyed it, but never actually got the game. Maybe it's time to take another look at it!

Quoting: MayeulCalthough my memory doesn't seem to be good on this one, as I couldn't find anything about it on the net.
Your memory may be playing tricks on you, I've never seen anything like that. ;) Would be cool though!

Ryan "Icculus" Gordon is looking for new games to port to Linux, pay not required

I'd love to see Dodge That Anvil! come to Linux (I dislike linking to my own work, but I have the only Let's Play of it in existence at this point and want to show it [the game, not my work] off :)). It's a one-man indie game from 2006 that isn't even on Steam, and is both incredibly polished and lots of fun, and I think a lot of people would love it if they only knew of its existence. It runs perfectly fine in WINE, but I'd love to see a Linux version as well.

The Linux beta build of 'WolfQuest' is coming along, could be live for everyone soon

I played this some years ago on Windows (before I switched to Linux), when it was still free. Obviously I don't know how many improvements have happened to it since then, but it was a decent enough game at the time. One feature it has that I thought was cool and haven't seen in other games was "Smell-O-Vision", where you can toggle on and off the ability to see scent trails of other animals, allowing you to either follow them (if prey, like rabbits or elk) or avoid them (if predators, like bears, though at that point they were more annoying than dangerous). The second part of the game, where you raise your litter of pups, was also pretty cool (though had more noticeable control difficulties when trying to interact with your kids, hopefully that's been fixed in the meantime).
