Turn the red planet green in Surviving Mars: Green Planet out now, along with the Armstrong free update

I took advantage of the free weekend to try it. I've been vaguely aware of the game's existence since it came out but never looked that much into it until my housemate started playing it and suggested I'd like it. Now, after a solid 10-hour play session, I've bought the First Colony Edition bundle for what feels like a steal, and can't wait to try out the actual terraforming stuff. :)

A new and quite interesting Steam Client Beta is out, nice Linux fixes and Vulkan shader downloading

Oh wow, I restart Steam after getting the pop-up notifying me of the update, and suddenly I have 56 games queued up to download shaders. ^_^

Edit: Hmm, now Steam completely freezes every 2–4 shaders it downloads for some reason. :S: Oh well, guess I'll just have to keep killing and restarting it.

You might need to bring a shovel for Stellaris: Ancient Relics, the newly announced story expansion

Oh, interesting! Sounds kinda like the system in Civ V: Brave New World where you excavate relics from archaeological sites. I actually proposed implementing something like Civ V: BNW's culture victory system last year (because I find it to be really fun and interesting trying to collect and organize sets of artifacts and great works); time to read up on this new expansion and see how similar it sounds. :D

Minimalistic puzzle game 'Simple Dot' releasing next month, looks like it could be interesting

Reminds me of a mix between The Incredible Machine and Lemmings (which I've never actually owned, just played on someone else's computer long ago). And it comes out on my birthday? Eh, I'll wishlist and see how much it is when it comes out.

Steam Play just got two updates with 4.2-3 and 3.16-9, some great stuff included

Ooo, One Finger Death Punch and Battlezone II are running now! OFDP is listed as "bronze" on ProtonDB and BZ II is listed as "borked", and now both just run! :) Though I haven't tested them hardly at all yet, and OFDP at least won't run full screen…time to do some testing and write some ProtonDB reports!

Valve released a stable Steam Client update yesterday, some nice fixes in for Linux and Steam Play

QuoteWhat would you like to see improved next in the Steam Client?

I'd love to see them support friend streaming in the linux client. I like being able to have people drop in and check out the games I'm playing.
I was just going to say this! :) One of my good but, er, less tech-savvy Windows friends keeps forgetting that I can watch him play but not the other way around and I have to keep telling him "No, sorry, still can't stream for you to watch." I saw they had some improvements to game streaming in this update, so maybe there's hope?

Maybe I should just try streaming on YouTube one of these days in the meantime. :S:

OpenTTD, the open source simulation game based on Transport Tycoon Deluxe has a new release

Funnily enough I was just playing this with a friend last night. :D Lots of fun, though I'll need to wait for this update to come to Debian. (Luckily I'm in no hurry.)

Valve have put out a new Steam Client Beta, it's small but good for Steam Play users

Quoting: BeamboomWhat do people use that overlay for, when gaming? For Steam chat? I just simply never enter that mode other than if someone happen to message me during a session...?
I use it for checking achievements—either to see which ones I have and decide which one(s) I feel like going for in a particular play session, or sometimes I'll get one seemingly at random and I'll pull it up to check and see what I just got it for. :D I'll also use it for referencing guides, since there's a handy link right there. And as mentioned, some games rely on it for inviting friends to play with you. Actually I barely use Steam chat itself…

I encountered this issue in Seasons After Fall, and checking now…it looks like it's fixed, so yay! ^_^

Dwarf Fortress is coming to Steam and itch.io with enhancements, some info about Linux support

Quoting: 14There are story details you can gather out of RimWorld, and I did appreciate that creativity. But...what can I say? I liked it but didn't fall in love with it. I feel like Dwarf Fortress will be similar except you have to invest a lot more time to learn its un-intuitive controls. Not sure if worth it.
Having played both (30 hours in RimWorld, probably well over a hundred in Dwarf Fortress), I've found that RimWorld never really "grabbed" me like Dwarf Fortress did. I'm not completely sure why, but I think one big difference is the 2D/3D split. In Dwarf Fortress I can build crazy 3D contraptions, mountain homes, giant statues, endless waterfalls, what have you, while in RimWorld I'm limited to a 2D plane, and I just really enjoy building things.

This isn't to say one's better than the other, or that you'll automatically like Dwarf Fortress, just that they're different enough in certain ways that I don't think liking (or disliking) one automatically means you'll like (or dislike) the other. Hope that helps.

For those weirdos like me who learned to play using the ASCII art and can't actually play with any sort of graphical pack, I asked on the Patreon page about the possibility of having ASCII as an option and got a reply saying that that's a planned feature. :)
