What do you think of that title so far? Videos I've seen of gameplay have been mixed...

Linux wise, I've been playing:
Defend the Keep: A quick, fun, delightful tower defense title. It'll probably be my go to in the short term for a quick gaming fix once Rocket League goes away...

Verdun: My quick shooter of choice since it was announced Ballistic Overkill is going away (this has been a sad Linux gaming year for me so far... Can community servers work with that?)

Speaking of which, I'm sad to say I've been using my Windows drive for the first time in literally years, mostly for X-Plane, which I've been addicted to since mid-last year and which is, sadly, more enjoyable on Windows than Linux (due to many excellent add-on's in the ecosystem being Windows only). I'll probably get the occasional Rocket League fix there too...

On the totally non-gaming random side, I'm trying to go Wayland only with Manjaro KDE with my work machines. It seems the team has made so much progress that I wanted to see if I could use it as a daily driver. So far, except for Plank not working (X11 only), it's been good! Some of my Citrix based work apps even scale better in Wayland than X, so bonus...

Quoting: igimenezHi Liam! i was playing Pioneer, and really love it. It is a game very unpolished and with a lot of rough edges, but can be nice when you want something relaxing to play
Wow, Pioneer as in Frontier Elite 2? It warms my heart tremendously to know that no matter how much computing, or games, or the whole world for that matter changes, there's always Frontier out there to play to sink into and escape... Is it still being actively developed? Does it have a community?

BattlEye now say they're working with Valve to support Steam Play
16 February 2020 at 10:15 pm UTC

It's still a WIP... The latest I saw was in a reddit thread here about a week ago.

About a year or so ago, someone claiming to be in the know posted somewhere that anti-cheat compatibilities are hard, and that even if everyone were going all out on this, it would "take years" to get it working and that, for all parties involved working on it, it isn't priority one, so it'll take a long while...

QuoteWell to me the performance is on par... Maybe you have a compositor issue?

I have to admit that I just realised that I haven't really played CS:GO much since switching to Manjaro a few weeks ago (was on several Ubuntu-Distros before) and now it seems fine. sorry for that!
Yeah, I had so many bizarre gaming issues in the past that now, on Manjaro and with its frequently updated kernels and drivers, just don't happen any more. Manjaro is a terrific distro for gaming...

Have we learned our lesson yet?
This has absolutely nothing to do with Wine at all... Wine was there before RL (RL always worked with it well before the port), and was there during, and now there after. It's not like they said, "Hey, guys, just do this via Proton instead..." E. P. I. C.... That's the whole story right there...

I haven't read all 8 pages of comments, but just wanted to post how sad I am about this. I have hundreds of hours in RL, and think it's maybe one of the most mechanically stellar games ever made. I was always proud that such a popular, perfect title was a first class Linux citizen, able to play with all the other platforms and updated the same day as everyone else. I always thought, "You know what, Linux gaming could end tomorrow, but at least I'll still have RL, and I could be OK..."

Steam reportedly coming to Chrome OS - Linux gaming across even more devices
17 January 2020 at 3:30 pm UTC

Yeah, very confusing... From the moment Chrome OS supported Linux apps, I thought Steam would have been priority 1 from the beginning, since the lack of gaming has been a big reason some people haven't invested in Chromebooks for their families. But once Stadia arrived, it was obvious why Steam wouldn't be a focus. And, for low spec Chromebooks that exist as cloud based machines without much storage, Stadia makes far more sense than a native Steam, but perhaps they are actually referring to Google working with Valve on the inevitable future Steam streaming service. Google by design or by their disorganization, while making their own services, realize that their platforms need to play well with other companies, and they haven't tried to leverage their "garden" to prevent others from entering. As an early Android fan, I wish they'd more limited their services to Google devices as a competitive tactic, but they've been focused on their services being on everything from iOS to Windows phone when it existed, so who knows?

Have a Razer laptop and use Linux? Keep a close eye on this new open source project

Quoting: CorbenWasn't it Razer who wanted to create the best Linux gaming laptop some time ago, but went completely silent on that?

Oh yeah, it was reported here on GoL...
I was thinking the exact same thing. I remember posting on those official Razer forums about that too...

Laminar Research readying Vulkan support for an upcoming public beta with X-Plane 11.50

Quoting: Mountain ManAh, the Microsoft shill is back to spread FUD about X-Plane
Dude, don't know what your problem is, but again, I'm a big XP fan and have spent a lot on add-ons and extras over the years and have been active in that community. I don't think it does XP or LR any good, though, to pretend it's a perfect product without flaws. And I only see good things in MS waking up and coming back to the sim party as everyone will get better.

Quoting: Mountain Man....all 12 of my CPU cores were kicking, so your claim that it "runs on only one CPU core" is false.
I looked into this (the single core thing has been said as a frustration by a lot of devs online) and apparently in the past year optimization has gotten better, but it depends a lot on what hardware combo you're running. One comprehensive testing online shows that 3 cores seems to be the max utilization as far as performance is concerned. That said, most games don't optimize for multicore, so they're now somewhat ahead of the game there...

Quoting: Mountain ManFurthermore, I did a test flight over New York City, one of the more demanding scenery dense areas of X-Plane 11, and the simulator took up no more than 10GB of RAM of the 40GB available on my machine, so your claim that it "will suck up every drop of memory and manages it poorly" is false.
Again, depends how you have NYC configured. It's my main flight area, and I'm using ortho, DD NYC and airports, and scenery for Newark and the port with UWXP for weather, and every drop of my 36 gigs will be taken up by XP. I've had it crash due to too little memory upon scenery transitions from New England to NYC, as XP doesn't unload scenery well in new areas. That "crash due to memory on scenery load and unload in transition" thing, BTW, is one of the big things that LR has said that Vulkan should fix....

Quoting: Mountain ManFinally, I checked my GPU usage, and it never fell below 90%, so your claim that X-Plane 11 "barely utilizes the GPU" is false.
Again, YMMV tremendously based upon hardware and drivers. Most testing I found online suggested that 50% utilization of GPU is common but, again, how it's configured and what you're doing with add-ons, etc makes a difference.

Again, I use XP almost every day, and just bought a big scenery package from OrbX. It's up there with Rocket League for my highest Steam hours... But there are issues. Threshold (a big fan site), did an editorial on such things recently and LR themselves made news by taking down their recent video Q&A because even they realized how weak a reply it was to the community. The Xplanereviews fan site I think has the best analysis of the state of things at the end of 2019...
