Quoting: FredOI'm finally getting Helium Rain. I haven't played a space trading type game since Freelancers! I had hoped they would bring Elite Dangerous to Linux at some point, but it never happened...
Consider buying X4: Foundations when the Linux port is finished. Seems to be an amazing game.

Yeah, it does look really good. I've got it wishlisted, and just waiting for the Linux release.

It's from a German developer too, so worth supporting in my book
A few points:
  • While it's great X4 is coming and ED and SC can be made to work on Wine/Proton now, absolutely still buy Helium Rain. It's a terrific game on its own, has a great style, and is deep. The Dev is super Linux friendly. I think he said our community was 11% or more of their purchases at one point.

  • Looking forward to X4 here as well. If they patch it up for us, looks like it has the potential to be a space sim to satisfy for years to come (especially given how mod friendly it is)

  • And, yes, ED and SC are working better and better on Wine, although I don't have strong desires oddly to play either based on my limited exposures (ED is somewhat shallow, and I've found prior flight dynamics on SC very unsatisfying)

Spaceship colony sim Space Haven looks awesome, will support Linux

Quoting: PatolaWishlisted! And speaking of all things from space, Hypergate was just released.
I'm going to follow this one as well. Thanks for the Hypergate reminder. Definitely will buy that. Risky to release during a Steam Sale, though...

Quoting: PatolaIf you guys like turn-based...
Just can't get into turned based gaming, I don't know why. I enjoy, say, chess but there's something that feels too unnatural and unpredictable about playing strategy gaming this way. I love RTS's... I wish it were different :(.

Some thoughts on Linux gaming in 2018, an end of year review
20 December 2018 at 9:14 pm UTC

Quoting: BeamboomThis year... No titles that really tickles my preferences... I've also purchased a stack of small indies that was fun for a handful of hours, but nothing I couldn't live without, to put it like that.

So actually, yeah when I think about it, this year does indeed feel like another step down, from a very subjective point of view. Overall 2018 feels more empty!
That's how I felt about both Windows and Linux gaming in 2018. I'm playing a number of 2018 titles right now, but my stalwart favorites are still titles released anywhere between 3-5 years ago, and longer in some cases, half Linux native and half Proton/Steam Play. My favorite game in total right now is the Windows game Angels Fall First, and that feels like it's been kicking around in EA forever (but still continuously updated). And, of course, the Linux native Rocket League and Ballistic Overkill are always a blast, but neither are new...

Still awaiting X4 for Linux so I can play that exclusively a year straight...

Transport Fever has a fresh patch out with community-requested improvements, new game teased

How is Transport Fever? I can't believe I missed that. That looks right up my alley. That kind of game lives and dies on its UI. Is it a solid title?

Quoting: GuestLinux is not alone in this. PC is losing ground as part of a much wider trend.
Thank you. I think this is a key point. I think this wasn't just maybe a weak year in Linux gaming, but perhaps in gaming in general. When I look at Windows games of the year in 2018, there isn't too much exciting me there either. I think AAA gaming, which is getting ever more expensive, is having the same effect as blockbuster movies: Sucking all the air, and capital, out of the industry as games get bigger and pricier. And the Switch at the lower end is taking attention and money away since it's quicker and cheaper to develop those titles. I think we're seeing an industry that is in bigger transition than we all think. This "race to the bottom" of all of the Epic and Discord Stores wouldn't be happening if this wasn't a hurting dev industry to some degree.

I'm a space game guy, so my game of 2018 was Helium Rain.

My most anticipated of 2019 is X4.

My most anticipated trend of 2019: I'm fascinated to see how far Valve can take Steam Play. It's hovering around 50% Platinum and Gold compatibility for the top 100 games, how high can they technologically push that number?

Best thing about Linux gaming in 2018 or 2019? GOL!! Thanks to Liam and team, and my best wishes for a happy holiday and restoring rest.

The WWI FPS game 'Verdun' just got a big free expansion, new UI in testing

No, I've had graphics errors in this game for months at this point, and the just discussed solution of forcing Vulkan didn't help :( . I love the game, but it's unplayable on Linux right now and the devs haven't responded to any of our reports except to say it's a Unity problem. I might try to force Proton to use it and see if it's playable that way...

For now, the experimental Linux (and Mac) port of ARMA 3 will not see any more updates

Such lack of commitment is what prevented me from purchasing it in the first place :(.

Have graphical distortions in Unity games with NVIDIA? Here's a workaround

Quoting: OrkultusTannenberg was also giving me this issue, thanks for the work around.

It actually in the end didn't work for me for Tannenberg. I'm on the same GPU. What is your full launch string?
