I love this game. I play it every weekend with my friends. Yesterday we did a little 2 on 2 LAN. I also help install it for kids at a community center and they play it 2 to 3 times a week. It is a such a gem. This is my first time using snap. So let's see how it goes.

We've teamed up with GOG for another fantastic giveaway: Surviving Mars & Iconoclasts

Iconoclasts would be my choice!

So I often donate pre-owned Linux desktops to non-profits and schools for their after-school programs. I also volunteer at a few teaching computer repair, maintenance and OS install along with running gaming groups. Some kids go on to get certified either A+ or LPIC or some sort. So I often run into kids from previous years and they tell me stories of where their Linux knowledge took them. So one of my star kids from 2007 was telling me a story of his time in college. He was playing CS with kids in the school when a kid came to him with their Macbook. He has become known as the go to IT kid in his dorm. So he gets out of his game to help the dude with the Macbook. The dude came to play but his Macbook was not acting right. My linux kid looks at the machine boots into it and finds that his machine is infected with something and his browsers are going to erroneous search engines. He tells the mac kid that his machine is infected but the mac kid states that it's impossible because macs don't get viruses and such. He also adds that macs don't get hacked. The linux kid tries to explain but the mac kid is not hearing it. So he hands the macbook back and says 'Well then you should be good then.' He goes back to playing his game and the mac kid stands there among the CS LAN. The mac kid yells how all he needed was a mac restore disk. Another kid happen to have one and hands it to him. He sits down and start using it. 20 mins into working with the restore disk everyone in the room starts hearing sex ads - LOUDLY. Everyone tells him to mute it but he is unable to do so...He starts getting flustered and takes off running with the macbook and down the stairs leaving the restore disk and a confused group. The CS lan goes on and comes to an end late at night. The lan kids get together to head out for some food and as they reach the lobby they see a smashed up macbook all over the lobby.

I hope this is not a STEAM only game. I am interested but not that interested that I would sign up for Steam.

Developers and Publishers to get their own special pages on Steam this month

Quoting: tonRitch.io -style game page is most perfect IMO.

Itch.io really is excellent to use for my purposes. The only feature they need to copy from Steam that I would like would be the ability to permanently delete games from your library.

Microsoft acquires GitHub for some loose change

If it's Microsoft related, I stay away from it. It has served me well both in personal peace and in the finance department.

What Linux games are you looking forward to this year? Here's my top picks

There is no game on the horizon that I am looking forward to at this time.

I am still playing

  • The Fall Part 2: Unbound

  • Butcher

  • Sage Fusion

  • Sage Fusion 2

  • Sunset Rider: Mask of Arcadius

I will say that the next game that I plan to get must be a text based game since I've been going back to a lot of text based games and playing a lot of freeware VNs. A lot of games that I put on my backlog list and finally got around to were really underwhelming. These short horror and sci-fi text based games have been hitting the mark. So if anyone knows of any up and coming drm-free linux native text based games - feel free to recommend them to me.

There's hints of the 'SEGA Mega Drive and Genesis Classics' pack coming to Linux

Awhile back DOTEMU gave out many of these for free as a promo when they were selling them. If they come out with a DRM-FREE version of these like SNK/NeoGeo/Playmore did with Humble Bundle and now GOG. I think all companies that still have legal claim to ROMs should sell ROMS. Make it easier for the retro scene to get their stuff legally and without issue.

What are you playing on Linux this weekend and what do you think about it?

  • Brutal FreeDoom - Unloved

  • This wad recommended to me awhile back and I got it running but never ended. I just got to the point where I got a red skull key. Totally lost in the maps but I am loving it.

  • Tales of Maj'Eyal

  • I've been playing this game at night for about 30 mins at a time before going to bed on my bedroom HTPC. My wife loves the music and like to read out loud the story as it unfolds. She also like to heckle me when I make a dumb move and get my character killed.

  • Protostriker M

  • I am on the search from SHUMPs that are no twin stick shooters since I hate using the sticks on modern day gamepads. I just want a gamepad and buttons to enjoy my games. This is a great little freeware gem. I am about it end this one as well.

  • The Fall 2: Unbound

  • Still on the first level of this game. I loved part 1 and I am eager to see what's in this game. I just ran enough of it to make sure it runs excellent on my machines and it does.

  • Xonotic

  • I have guest coming over tonight for drinks, potluck dinner and fragging. I have 16 machines ready to roll but due to weather only 12 are coming. We doing no bots then 1) Domination 2) Last Man Standing 1 Life Each and 30 Deathmatch. Winner gets bragging rights.

Sounds like Linux game downloads are popular on game store itch

Steam still has one big advantage left over the others so far : you can get a refund.

I left Steam last summer because of their refund policy. 14 days and under 2 hours of game time. If I find a game breaking bug at the 2+ hour mark, within the 14 day period, I am stuck with a broken game.

On GOG and especially on itch, I get my money back.

itch.io is my number one store. GOG is number two. That's about it for me unless the devs or publisher are selling linux native versions on their own site.

itch's app is excellent but I also download the binaries and install those direct.
