I've been dabbling with some different games to usual...

Fury Unleashed (from the latest Humble Choice) - I really like this style of rogue-lite twin-stick shooter-platformer. It plays well and does lots of things right, but for me I'm finding the game quite frustrating because I'm unable to complete the first chapter and access later levels. The reason that I'm failing - because the game has two settings - "Hard" which is aimed at Pro-gamers (using a gamepad) and "Easy" which is aimed at everyone else but doesn't give you Steam Achievements if you use it. I'm playing on Hard with a keyboard and mouse (I prefer keyboard and mouse rather than an easier-to-use gamepad) - Thus, I cannot progress. Still, I keep on coming back for more and more punishment.

A couple of years ago, I completed Broforce on default settings (using keyboard and mouse, not gamepad).. so I'm not completely useless in this genre.

I tried out card-battler game Iris and the Giant and it's okay. Worth returning to and trying some more.

I've played two native Windows titles on Linux using Proton: Lovecraft's Untold Stories - a twin-stick shooter, and Blazing Beaks - another rogue-lite twin-stick shooter. Both of those games worked fine with Proton and show promise.

I've installed Project Zomboid and gone through the tutorial - It looks like I'll appreciate this one, too. Noting that it is worth installing the Beta release of this which has more features added, rather than the regular stable release.

I paused Humble Choice for April, so my 20% subscriber discount is now inactive. The new May Choices become available in 3 days' time (May bundle includes Metro Exodus, Hellpoint) and once that is running, I might pick up something in the sale.

For me, getting the best deals is a priority, and giving to charity is a bonus on top. (If I'm feeling charitable, I'd generally do it on my own terms, outside of a Games Marketplace.)

I've given it a go, noting a couple of things along the way:

I did have an older gzdoom installed on my system (Debian 11 Bullseye). It did not work with the current version 3 of the Blade of Agony mod. I visited the gzdoom homepage and downloaded version 4.5.0 and installed with:

dpkg -i gzdoom_4.5.0_amd64.deb

After doing this, the Blade of Agony game worked.

I found that I needed to go through the keyboard settings, and change many of the controls to use better choices. It was a surprise when WASD keys didn't work, and the Jump key wasn't assigned to Space bar (amongst others).

The fact that the game had an invisible cross-hair by default was another surprise, which I fixed in the settings.

I've played with the mod for about an hour now, and I wanted to be utterly blown away by it (like I was when I tried out Prodeus' play-test demo). There are little niggles about how the game plays that bring down the experience. I've had no problem when I've been playing similar titles, like the original games of Doom, Doom2, Quake, Quake2 and beyond.

As an example of a niggle - Jumping in the game from box-top to box-top: Having to run and release the jump at the perfect moment, else fail to land on the target. (I play plenty of other games where I have to judge jumps, e.g. Dying Light, 7 Days To Die, Doom 2016, and don't have problems with them!)

I will commend the production values of the mod - It is certainly a work of love by the developers.

I decided to pick it up a couple of days ago. Haven't really given it a go yet though (other than installing and trying the tutorial). I did watch a bit of youtuber/twitcher Games4Kickz playing it, a few weeks back.

For me, 7 Days To Die is a really fantastic survival game that gives you so much choice over how you do things in the game, and does so with a first-person interface which is a pleasure to use. I don't think Project Zomboid can hope to match it, but it'd be good to spend some time experiencing and playing a decent alternative.

I'm keen to get Valheim eventually - I'm patient about these things, and just because 'everyone else' is playing it now doesn't mean I have to. Generally I buy later to take advantage of discounts as well.

This improvement upgrade is typical of the type of thing I'm going to get when I play my first fresh game - It'll be a more fleshed-out experience with less flaws.
