For those wanting to try out Steam Play, the new Humble Monthly has Yakuza 0

Christmas Games Sales and the January Humble Subscription (with the hidden games being revealed on 4th Jan 2019) have not worked out too well for me this time. One big underlying reason is that I have amassed a very sizeable game collection, mostly favouring Linux titles. Inevitably, Humble's late reveals will (sometimes) contain (multiple) games that I already own.

In this particular case, I didn't own Wizard of Legend in the early reveals so decided to not pause this month, but to take it. (I didn't especially want the Windows early reveals, Just Cause 3 XXL and Project Cars 2 - Windows titles.)

During the Christmas Sales, I expanded my collection by a number of titles at nice discount, favouring Linux. Two of the titles I bought over Christmas - Observer and Sundered - Arrghhh! - They now turn up in the January bundle. It feels too much like I've bought them twice over now.

My "wins" were: Wizard of Legend, The Darkside Detective - Linux titles.
My "fails" were: Observer, Sundered, Regions of Ruin - Linux titles I own (and 2 I'd bought right before the Subs reveal).
My "not-wanteds" (Windows games, not previously owned): Just Cause 3 XXL, Project Cars 2, Qube 2.

Humble's Monthly Subscription works out better if (a) you favour Windows, and (b) do not own an excessive number of games.

Meanwhile, had I NOT bought Observer and Sundered just prior to the Reveal... I'd be patting myself on the back right now for getting a really great bundle. The word "Unlucky" certainly crops up here.

Some Linux games we’re excited to see in 2019, a list to keep you going

Here's my opinion on these upcoming titles mentioned in the article:

Probably insta-buy:

Serious Sam 4 - Really like the Serious Sam games
Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Very appealing, wishlist material:

Stoneshard - Already played a bit of the prologue demo and like it
Pathway - I like the Indiana Jones style and setting to this

Looks interesting:

Eastshade - looks like a nice calm, relaxing game with lots of exploration and eye-candy
We Happy Few
Overland
System Shock
Hellpoint

Titles that I'm also watching with interest, which weren't mentioned and might not come to Linux:

Dying Light 2 - If on Linux, would be an insta-buy.
Into The Breach - Sunset Games did say they'd port to Linux (eventually). Another insta-buy for me.
The Bard's Tale 4
Insomnia: The Ark
Underworld Ascendant
Iratus: Lord of the Dead
Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones

I have just (today) grabbed The Bug Butcher on Steam at historical lowest price: 80% discount (£1.11).

Very impressed so far. Great animations, novel enemies, fast and decent game play - and all for an awesome price.

Valve have one more Steam Play update out before the end of 2018 with 3.16-6

Quoting: ThormackGuys, could you recommend some nice free-to-play windows games?

Never used Proton before and don't want to buy win games just for testing.

Surprised you've never accumulated any Windows titles from Bundles, e.g. Humble, Fanatical (Bundle Stars), or elsewhere.

DOTA has a native Linux version so it is not a suitable candidate for Steam Play / Proton.

Having a look at Steam's own Free To Play list, I searched on What's Being Played and here are a few titles that are not native Linux which you could consider:

Path of Exile, Warframe, Trove, Eve Online, Neverwinter, Quake Champions, Minion Masters, Gems of War, Fallout Shelter, Stronghold Kingdoms, Blockpost, Bit Heroes, Soda Dungeon, Pixel Puzzles Ultimate.

Personally I tried Fallout Shelter on Proton, only a few days after Proton was released and that worked fine.

Aww no. I just checked my Steam wishlist, and there are a bunch of games at an acceptable level of discount. Now, it is great to grab them on discount rather than pay more... BUT... I still have a massive stockpile of existing bought games that I haven't touched yet. I like owning NOW but I'm also thinking about the practicalities, e.g. The fact that I could maybe buy at a later date at an even more substantial discount.

Also, it is quite annoying to potentially go through pages and pages of titles, hunting out that one beacon which is so tempting that you can't resist. Fortunately many of my wishlist titles that really appeal to me are hovering at 20% discount level, which doesn't break my discipline.

One small indie title that I tried the free demo and liked is Frost which is sitting at 40% discount. Thinking that I'll probably grab that. Thumbs up to free demos.

Also might grab I Hate Running Backwards which is at a tasty 75% discount.

Some thoughts on Linux gaming in 2018, an end of year review

Realising that you can't put every notable game into this end of year article, surprised that Slay The Spire didn't make the notables list.

Meanwhile, although Facepunch has dropped support for Linux I have been playing RUST for months and not had any issue with it. Hundreds of hours of play. All the updates, e.g. the new balloons, the new ship, new weapons, new monument puzzles, and so on - all fine.

Investigated a bit more for myself. I guess that "Yes" it is possible, by doing a fair bit of work for yourself (rather than relying on the built-in features of the game). On Windows there is a virtual joystick utility called SmartProPo Plus that you set up and once that is sorted out, you can access that Virtual Joystick in game. On Linux there's a similar one available on Github.

It seems that the similar game - FPV Freerider (Windows and Mac) works with a selection of RC Remotes, via USB adapter cable.

Long ago, I played FMS (Flying Model Simulator) using an E-Sky RC Remote and a special trainer-port-to-usb adapter cable on Windows.

I'm quite interested in this but would be particularly interested if you could use it with an official R.C. Remote, e.g. Spektrum DX6i using USB link cable. In my cursory look over the Steam page. I didn't spot anything to indicate that you'd get proper kit to work on it.

GOG are doing a Black Friday sale with some good Linux games cheap

Quoting: adamhmAs usual, older/classic games currently on sale on GOG that I've made Wine/Proton wrappers (wrapper release list/links to release threads in the third post) for:

The Witcher 3 GOTY

Hi adamhm,

Thanks very much for your amazing scripts.

Wondering if your Witcher 3 GOTY script enables playing the game near perfectly on Linux?

I was very impressed by your Shadow Warrior 2 script which worked perfectly for me, despite not having the latest Nvidia graphics drivers on my Debian Linux install. (I'm still on Nvidia 390.87 :/ ).
