It says "Steam Link Required". Is there a way around it that I don't see?
Well, if you sign up for the game, you get a Windows, Mac, Linux Download page on your Humble keys page. The download is 4.1GB, and you can grab that without installing Steam. The order page has icons for "Steam" and "DRM Free".
So where can you "sign up for the game" without a steam account?

Shortest Trip to Earth, a top-down spaceship simulator inspired by FTL and Firefly will come to Linux

For me, I complete the whole game a lot less regularly than 60%, but I have done it numerous times (maybe 10% of plays) and I don't find the RNG ruins the game. There is a surprising amount of skill and decision-making tucked away. Also you unlock extra ships by getting to Zone 8 (and other ways) without needing to kill the Boss Ship. Trying out the mission with a completely different ship helps keep the game fresh and interesting.
While I'm finishing off on tactical/skillful games like FTL, I heartily recommend Dungeon Warfare. Completely different type of game, but it scratches the same type of itch that FTL does.

Quoting: enzQuoting: GuestI really hope this doesn't use the same RNG as Faster Than Light. I don't like games in general that build a major mechanic around an RNG anyway... or in the case of FTL the main mechanic is the RNG.
That's what I didn't like about FTL, 101 ways to screw you over with very few that could help you out along the way.
I consider FTL mostly a game of skill and the RNG is essential for the variety and great replayability. On normal difficulty, I win more than 60% of the games and among the lost ones are many where I knew I made some mistakes and that could still have been winnable. Sure, there are some games that you cannot win, but my guess is that it is less than 10%.

Thanks for the comments. I didn't know about the map control, so I'll give that a try.
Yes, I guess the mining hat is the best way to do useful things while it is dark.
Regarding the surprisingly quick death, I was wearing the Riot Helmet and the Metal Chest Plate, and full set of clothing. I don't remember crunching of head shots, so I guess it was body shots. I was at 100 HP and running. The shooter was about 30m away, and at about 2am direction to my running forward. I spotted the shooter before they started firing, started to react, and within one second I was lying on the ground unable to do anything.
Regarding the August 2017 Steam Hardware survey, I have just totalled up the values myself, and sharing here:
8GB system RAM or LESS = 74.07% of the user base
9GB system RAM or MORE = 25.93% of the user base
Another statistic:
4GB system RAM or LESS = 25.08% of the user base
5GB system RAM or MORE = 74.92% of the user base

Quoting: eloQuoting: g000h- It gets very very dark at night in Rust, the night lasts for a substantial length of time, and the various light sources give very poor lighting. (The playing during night isn't so great.)Craft yourself a flashlight for your weapon! Or make yourself a mining helmet. Night time is scary, but it's not extremely hard to deal with!
Quoting: g000h- It's fairly irritating finding some resources (e.g. stone). I know that you can get to know the resource spawn points over time, but there is rock everywhere and you can only pick up particular clumps of it. At least all the trees drop wood!100% agreed and they are aware of this. The roadmap shows that they are working on more ways to get mined resources.
Quoting: g000h- The map only lets you view the immediate area, which means you can get lost pretty easily. (And no zoom.)This is wrong, thank god, haha. You can right click to make the map interactive (zoom, pan and draw). Not the best controls, but the map is much better than what you think!
Quoting: g000hI don't mind the fact that I died, I mind the fact that the game is set up to enable such instantaneous kills to someone in armour. (It's a balance thing.)What does armour mean? With proper armour you can take a decent amount of hits unless they headshot you (which has a crunch sound).

Looks like FTL with some "Space Run" mixed in too. A combination that I'd be very happy to try out. But it does take all the other elements, e.g. game balance, intuitive interface, quality product, events and surprises - to make a game truly special.

I've now started playing Rust, on the GOL server. For me, it is running perhaps better than any other first-person game I've played. By that I mean Framerate combined with Graphics settings. I play at 4K resolution and it looks fantastic. Really nice looking game. (4K, Fantastic setting, using GTX 1080 Ti, 16GB DDR3 RAM, Core i5-4670K)
However all is not sweetness and light: After installing, the Anti Cheat system was erroring out. I hunted around on Steam forums and found that there is a previous library file which hot-fixes the issue. I went into the Rust Plugin game folder and swapped out the Anti Cheat library .so file. Happily it was working after that.
I'm very impressed with the game, but... There are things about it which I find irritating, having come from playing other similar titles (e.g. Dying Light, 7 Days To Die). I'm not going to mention them all but here's a few that come to mind..
- It gets very very dark at night in Rust, the night lasts for a substantial length of time, and the various light sources give very poor lighting. (The playing during night isn't so great.)
- Prefer how the buildings get constructed in 7D2D, there's more choice and you can fully influence (destroy) the environment.
- It's fairly irritating finding some resources (e.g. stone). I know that you can get to know the resource spawn points over time, but there is rock everywhere and you can only pick up particular clumps of it. At least all the trees drop wood!
- The map only lets you view the immediate area, which means you can get lost pretty easily. (And no zoom.)
- First time I got killed in the game, I'd been playing for a few hours and then 2 people had guns and went after me. Didn't have a chance, but I did manage to run for a while with a couple of hits and bullets whizzing around (i.e. it wasn't an instant death.)
- After about 25 hours of play, base constructed, I've got some kit from air drops (including nice guns), running after the latest air drop. Keeping to cover, keeping my eyes open to other players, zigzagging, with full health and full armour on. Just at the very end when I haven't spotted anyone, and go over to the air-drop. Bam,bam, bam, bam and my guy is lying on the floor unable to do anything. That was over in a second. The guy was in front of me, i.e. he hadn't been trailing me and lining up his sights. No chance to fight back. I would have expected to last at least a few seconds with full health and armour, but no. Just adding, I was running when this happened, i.e. a moving target. I don't mind the fact that I died, I mind the fact that the game is set up to enable such instantaneous kills to someone in armour. (It's a balance thing.)

I'm interested to know which is the better game: Avorion, ASTROKILL or Everspace ?
Anyone have any viewpoints to share? How do they compare to Elite Dangerous?
