GOG attempt to bring customers back with a revival of Good Old Games

Clearing up about trackers and privacy following some comments earlier on this article:

The article's link to "The Wheel of Time" looks like this:

https://af.gog.com/game/the_wheel_of_time?as=1636858786

My understanding is that this is an affiliate link, i.e. It is a way for the GOL website to gain favour and/or financial support from the seller website.

Once a person clicks on that link, then it redirects instantly to a advert tracker link, which looks like this:

https://track.adtraction.com/t/t?a=1578845458&as=1636858786&t=2&tk=1&url=http://www.gog.com/game/the_wheel_of_time

With uBlock Origin as the blocking technology, it pops up a page offering choices - Do you wish to go through the tracking link, do you wish to block adtraction website permanently, or other options?

The eventual end-point, where the link ends up is here:

http://www.gog.com/game/the_wheel_of_time

Privacy advocates would prefer to go straight to the end-point, and not through the tracking bit in the middle.

It's the usual thing with stuff like this:

- Do you not visit the link at all?
- Do you purposefully jump to the end-point avoiding the tracking bit? (i.e. Cutting and Pasting the url to manually dodge the tracker)
- Do you grit your teeth and accept the tracking "this time" because it possibly helps out GOL?
- Noting that you could always "clear your cookies" afterwards so that this tracker cannot follow you around the internet (A good idea, methinks!)
- Most normies aren't even aware that the tracker stage is there.

I'd add that GOL does a good job of not putting Adverts all over the GOL website. In my opinion it is worth considering supporting GOL over Patreon, to help fund the site. If you do not support GOL with contributions, then accepting affiliate links (and then deleting the cookies afterwards) is a helpful alternative.

I played and liked the demo that was available a couple of weeks ago. It is certainly something I'd consider buying and want to have in my library. However, this style of game isn't really my thing, so I'm holding off for now.

Starting this Summer, iFixit will offer Steam Deck replacement parts

Valve's decision to make Steam Deck repair not locked-down and give the end-consumer choice in how to deal with it - should be fully applauded.

This is one of the problems with lots of technology today - The manufacturer makes it especially difficult to repair and use the device the way you want. After you buy the product, it should be 100% your product, and not still under control of the original manufacturer.

Mobile phones should *not* be glued together. Independent repair people and you should be able to buy replacement parts.

And open in the deck browser YOUR_HOST_IP:5555

or python -m http.server 5555 for when your system is defaulting to python3.

Heroic Games Launcher now works nicely on Steam Deck

Quoting: g000hno store and no adverts, muhahaha.

...Heroic has a store built in for EGS, and what do you mean by adverts?

Hey there. Thanks for the correction. I've revisited the Heroic Launcher (Bear in mind that it is brand new to me) and I note that the Stores are squirreled away in a separate tag menu i.e. Yes, they are available but no they aren't "in your face" when you want to access to your game library.

When I launch Epic client on Windows, I get presented immediately with a store front and typically there are video adverts for the various games. Noting that I load up the Windows Epic client very rarely.

Actually, I ended up being gobsmacked by this. I have been avoiding Lutris and other launchers thus far. But I have been picking up all the freebies from Epic, so I decided for once - I'm going to give this a try (finally).

I run Debian 11 Bullseye, and rather than download the repository, I decided to pick up the AppImage release instead. Make the file executable, install zstd ( sudo apt install zstd ) and then run it. Instantly, it is as if I have the Epic client on my Linux desktop, and when I choose to install a game, it pulls it down and sets up all the Wine/DXVK/Prefix settings automatically - so the Windows game is ready to play on Linux.

Tried two games in my Epic stash - both worked fine. Heroic launcher is like what Epic launcher would have been for Linux but better - no store and no adverts, muhahaha.

Definitely getting this one. It fills 3 entries from my wishlist, and I'll probably be happy with the others.

Nice that there is a demo for Linux on Steam to try out now. And the game is pretty promising as well (wishlisted).
