Wednesday Madness, a quick look at some good Linux gaming deals

Quoting: DMGPlayed Mad Max for the first time, and I must say, I'm not impressed. The graphic looks good, but all bugs and glitches what game still has, makes it annoying to play. In two hours I had two big bugs, when I had to restart whole game. Thought, it is because of linux, but no, in yotube I found many videos about similar bugs and glitches.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. While I wasn't blown away with Mad Max, I did thoroughly enjoy it. I had practically zero bugs or glitches while playing, and it was playing well for me even running at 4K resolution. Metacritic gives it a critical review score of 73% which I feel is a pretty fair result.

Also, at this price point (£3-£4) on sale, the game is an absolute bargain compared to the retail price.

Interested to know what games you have played and rate highly on Linux?

The Humble Jumbo Bundle 8 is now quite a good deal for Linux gamers

Yes, I spotted and bought the full bundle last week. One more thing to mention is that a high percentage of the titles (Linux ones and the Windows only ones) have DRM Free downloads as well as Steam Keys.

For me, when I have a DRM free Windows title, I'm more willing to try to use it with WINE than a title which only has a Steam key.

A few decent deals I've spotted:

We Are The Dwarves on Humble for £3.98 (81% off)

Trine 2 on Steam for £2.09 (85% off)

Brutal Legend DRM free on GOG for £1.19 (90% off)

I bought Broforce last weekend from GOG, when it was on sale (75% off). Shame, but it isn't on sale any more. Really enjoyable platform shooter with destroyable environment - Highly recommended when it comes back on sale - or full price :P

Editorial: On paying for Linux games when you already have a Windows version

Does anyone have stats on this issue? How many Steam games require you to make multiple purchases if you want to own them on more than one platform?

Personally I am not happy with buying a release per platform. Well, I guess it is okay to follow that scheme, but you need to chop the game price down to suit. £30 game = £10 for Linux version, £10 for Mac version, £10 for Windows version.

If I've been desperate to get my hands on a game, and it is currently only on Windows with no Linux version on the horizon, then I will be tempted to buy it on Windows. (This happened last year for me - DOOM.) BUT I wanted to buy it on my platform in the first place. So then, if that game comes out 6 months later on Linux, it would feel like I am getting ripped off by the game company if I then need to buy it again. Given the option, I would have bought the Linux release on Day 1 (assuming the game is released on all platforms on Day 1).

I hope the vast majority of game releases (on Steam and elsewhere) keep offering all platforms at time of release, and generally add the extra platforms when they become available "for free".

Here's another idea, but it probably wouldn't work - *IF* the game company releases per platform (on Steam), and later on adds another platform, then it would be good if the purchaser could switch the release to the platform they prefer.

Also, it would be good when you make purchases/claim keys on Steam, GOG, itch.io if they implemented a system to inform the game companies the preferred platform of the buyer. (That way, even if you grab the Windows version, you're letting them know that you wanted the Linux version.)

What have you been playing recently and what do you think about it?

I tend to mix my playing between difficult gaming and casual gaming. Usually the casual type requires strategic thought, solving puzzles, etc.

Shadow Warrior (2013) - Played about 25 hours of this. Completed the campaign. Really like it a lot. One reason I played it is to generate some stats back at Flying Wild Hog HQ that Linux gamers play their games *BECAUSE* I really want them to hurry up and release Shadow Warrior 2 on Linux. Come on guys, pleeeeeese! On SW 2013, loved the story, the cutscenes, the weapons, the upgrades, the graphics, the mechanics of the fighting, and it played great at 4K on my system.

Dungeon Rushers - Played about 33 hours of this. It is a fairly well built dungeon-crawling game, and I have enjoyed playing it. It is good for playing in short bursts, e.g. one or two dungeons, and then quit, and then come back to it a couple of days later. Each dungeon takes maybe 15 minutes to complete (or die), and then assuming one of your party goes up in rank, you spend time crafting, moving items around your inventory, choosing the upgrades for the levelled-up character, etc. However, it is not without issues: The game-play is fairly grindy, and quite same-y, monsters change, you can change members in your party, each character has different talents, but because you keep on repeating similar stuff over and over, the game isn't as good as it could have been.

Letter Quest Remastered - Played about 5 hours of this. It is a casual game, with similar elements to TV's Blockbuster game show. You have to build words from grids of letters. There are different challenges along the way, such as using high-value letters, compete in a time-limit, letters which are different colours have different effects on progress, and so on. Nice casual fun and also good for brain training. Tend to play 10 - 20 minute sessions, and then move on.

Slaine: Back from Hell - Is a difficult platformer 2d fighting game. You play the Slaine character, who starts off with a sword, some magic, and various combo moves. Best played with a gamepad (in my case, an XBOX 360 one). The pixel graphics are fantastic. The game-play is very well built. Music, audio, environment - This is a really good game. So, what's my "problem" with it: Too hard for me. Takes me a long time to progress. In my opinion this is a hard-core gamer's game.
(Note that I am a lot happier playing fast DOOM style games with WASD and 2-button mouse, NOT a gamepad.)

Similar to this game.. I really like "Skyforce Anniversary Edition" which is an excellent version of the shoot-em up arcade genre. Also, importantly - Skyforce is on Linux, and it plays fantastically.

I've played it for 84 hours, done lots of the side quests, and completed the main quest. Still got plenty of side quests to finish off. Very enjoyable throughout. Liked the upgrades, the car customisations, the way the fighting worked. Very happy with the graphics, the setting, voice acting, background music. It's a well constructed premium title that plays well.

My couple of niggles were: The climbing/jumping mechanic could have been better. I found it a bit irritating the slow-down when you take out a gun to aim it. Hunting around for all quest items in each quest location was somewhat painful/grindy.

Just feel like adding this - Broforce is on Humble Bundle site for same price that it is on GOG ( £2.99, 75% off ). BUT if you buy it on Humble, you get DRM-free download version *and* Steam key version. Ah Humble, you spoil us so.

How to livestream from Linux to Twitch, a simple guide to being awesome on Linux

Thanks for sharing. Always good to have information like this in case I'd need it.

One thing I think a lot of new Linux gaming users would like is information about setting up graphics drivers on Linux. What to do if your display manager stops working, how to install a proprietary driver (and get rid of it again), all those tricky things.

I finally completed Half-Life 2 on Linux and it was quite the experience
