The Humble Store winter sale is on and DiRT Showdown is free
13 January 2017 at 1:31 am UTC

Gawd! Another sale to search through all the bargains. Spent most of the evening looking so far. 60 pages and counting so far (starting at high discounts and going down). As I bought the XCOM2 Humble Monthly Subscription, and it is still active I can grab these Sale games for an additional 10% off.

Some of the titles I'm considering (typically 75% - 90% off):

Kings of Kung Fu (steam, early access) £1.52
Braveland Pirate (drmfree, steam, android) £1.07
Solar Shifter EX (steam) £1.34
Heroes of Loot (drmfree, steam) £0.74
Fox & Flock (drmfree, steam) £0.39
LYNE (drmfree, steam, android) £0.67

Also considering some Windows titles - boo ;) - because they're older, not likely to come to Linux, I want them, and can probably play using Wine.

Noting that Wizardry 6 and 7 old games are now available to Linux users on Steam, by packaging them with Dosbox. Wish more games companies would do this with their older titles.

As usual - King of the Discount ;)

Exclusive: Civilization VI now fully confirmed to be coming for SteamOS & Linux and soon too

I would be very interested, after the game comes out for Linux (and has been available for a while) to see the percentage users / user count who are running Linux. Also a similar percentage / user count for the older game Civ5.

I'm guessing that a massively popular game, like the Civ franchise, there will be sufficient numbers of Linux users to cover the payment for the porting work (and make profit from it).

Some absolute crazy deals are available on Steam for Linux for under £4

Here's a couple of real cheapies which I've enjoyed and recommend:

Vertical arcade shooter, nice fast action: Void Invaders £0.33 (83% off): http://store.steampowered.com/app/391170/

Toki Tori - old school platformer, very good £0.34 (90% off): http://store.steampowered.com/app/38700/

EDIT:

While I've been looking through the list, deciding on titles to buy - I spotted another of my purchases...

Overlord £0.87 (75% off) http://store.steampowered.com/app/11450/
This is a classic game from a few games ago, which has only recently (mid 2016) been ported to Linux. I've been enjoying it (playing at 4K resolution, no problem).

What game are you truly thankful to have on Linux & SteamOS?

My number 1:
Dying Light: The Following Enhanced Edition
It surprised me that this game impressed me so much. Visually stunning. The sheer terror of night missions and being chased by Volatiles. The progression and upgrade system. Trying to pick a lock when you know there is a group of zombies shuffling up behind you. The combat mechanics. The main missions and all the many varied side quests. The crafting of weapons. Fell in love with the parkour mechanics, jumping from roof to roof. Triple A title, nearly perfect.

Honourable mentions:
Serious Sam 3 BFE
- I've always loved Doom-style/Quake-style run around, dodge, and shoot games. SS3 is a fantastic example of this genre. Completed it on 'Serious' setting. The game-play in this FPS game is *just* the way I like it.

FTL (Faster Than Light)
- I just keep returning to this for additional roguelike space adventures. It has lots of replayability, thanks to the various ships you unlock by completing objectives. Each ship and ship/crew configuration makes the game play differently. More of a casual style game, i.e. you don't have to bash the keyboard like mad, but things can get intense during a hard scrap. Lots of strategy.

Legend of Grimrock
In my heart, my true gaming love is for RPG games. So annoying that Bethesda aren't releasing Linux ports of theirs (yet). This game was a fantastic RPG treat for me. Indie title, very polished, very fun to play.

Wine Staging updated, allows you to play DOOM on Linux

What's with this trolling and name-calling?

You can play legitimately bought Windows games (i.e. with Steam client, Origin client, Uplay client) on Linux via Wine compatibility layer. No need to suggest that people who use Wine are "Pirates".

Also the derogatory term "Wiener" applied to people who dual-boot. Maybe they like the game so much that they are willing to put up with this. It is no different to all those hardcore gamers who buy a specific console because they want to play a particular game which is found nowhere else.

The Steam Winter sale is now live, prepare your wallets

Well, I might be getting more, but a couple of days early I got:
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided on Steam sale for £13.19 (67% off)

I highly recommend Dying Light: The Following Enhanced Edition £15.99 (60% off)
Already own that game, this is one of the lowest prices I've seen it. Sunk 130 hours into it so far.
As mentioned by "pb", Dying Light's "The Following" DLC is also up for grabs, cheap, if you already own the base game.

Just now on the Steam Winter sale I picked up:
Satellite Reign for £3.44 (85% off)

This next one I've also picked up recently (on Humble) but it is same price on Steam sale £0.69 (90% off)
Spacebase DF-9
I realise that the game development has been dropped by Double Fine (boo!) but:
- At this price it is very cheap, and I'm happy messing around with it for a few hours in its current status.
- Double Fine released the source to the community, and there is an improved community version to mod the base version.
- Double Fine generously added a copy of their game 'Hack n Slash' as a Steam gift item to my account, once I added Spacebase.

Edit: Just spotted something else, and it is pretty impressive...
Double Fine has a great big bundle of games, most that run on Linux, for £4.78 (92% off - that is a massive discount).
- If I didn't already own more than half the games, I'd be tempted by that.

Wine Staging updated, allows you to play DOOM on Linux

Have to say, I'm super hyped about this. I actually dual-boot to Windows for games like this one.

Most of the time, I'm playing Linux games on Linux, and it can be weeks (or months) of continuous Linux use (not booting up Windows at all). The game has to 'really' appeal to me for me to load up Windows in order to play it.

The progress of the Wine compatibility layer is great news for Linux gamers who want to play all their older 'Windows only' titles which will never get ported, as well as all the new ones which might get ported or might not.

It is great news that Vulkan API games run under Wine on Linux with such fantastic framerates. I hope game developers really get behind Vulkan technology, because it is OPEN and it performs great. And if the company decides to port it to Linux, it'll be easier. And if the company doesn't port it to Linux, then we can still get it working with Wine.

Game companies should protect their own futures, because a monopoly like Microsoft has the power to back them into a corner.
