Garry Newman, developer of Rust & Garry's Mod on supporting Linux, possibly not for future games
6 December 2015 at 3:12 pm UTC
If he'd said that, he'd have gotten a ton of sympathy and offers of help. But no, he's only saying that now after several months, if not years, taking the absolute piss out of Linux while making money by offering utterly appalling Linux versions of his Windows games.
Glad to see he's wising up, actually. I'd rather he stick with that attitude - take the SteamOS logo off Garry's Mod and Rust until he's willing to offer the same quality on those titles that Windows users enjoy. But I doubt it. He's only talking about future titles here, so G-Mod and Rust will continue to be sold as a supported platform, yet continue to play second class citizen.

God forbid anyone criticize the "great" Garry Newman.
God forbid anybody criticize Linux. Anyway, I didn't know who he was, I'm just pointing out that it's tiresome to see all these toxic replies any time somebody says: "I don't have the skill/capacity to support Linux".

No SteamOS/Linux icon, but it's 60% off for the next couple of days. Looks great though, slightly reminiscent of Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, which I loved.
My First Hours With A Steam Link

Here's the purchase page for the Steam Link. It says "Wired connection recommended". It doesn't say "Properly provisioned, QoS capable, gigabit network essential". A "5 port piece of crap switch" will still be (way) better than the WIFI minimum requirements, so why focus on that? Incidentally, it looks like the Steam Link itself only supports 100Mb, so Gigabit is even more of a red herring here.
Essentially, this is a case of YMMV. A lot of folk are more tolerant of the audio and stuttering issues than others, but so far, around 130 positive reviews are somewhat balanced by around 35 negative reviews. So 1 in four are having a hard enough time to say "stay clear".
And it sounds like this review is one in the four.

Quoting: longshot902Reviews like this really need to go into more detail and provide more data on what is being tested. Simply stating "experience is very disappointing" and giving no real information should be avoided.
What network equipment lives between your host and link? Is it a 5 port piece of crap switch (or worse hub), or a managed/smart switch with proper QoS,
I run my steamlink with a properly provisioned network and a fairly good host computer <snip>.

The mod involved is incredibly hard work. He's not an official source, but as pointed out the article, if the devs actually had news regarding SteamOS, they would have shared it by now. I've spent a small fortune in games over the past 5 weeks or so and had to forgo plenty of excellent material in the process.
This is their loss, not ours.

Roguelike Classic ADOM Released On Steam

As one of the Steam reviews has already put it:
Considering my 155 hours in Tales of Maj'Eyal (ToME4), I think I might have to pick this up! Right after Alien:Isolation. And Invisible. And Grow Home, Galak-Z and Axiom Verge. Woah, that SteamOS launch sale really pounded my wallet...!
QuoteOne of the most popular roguelikes of all time has finally made it to Steam. There's a reason why ADOM and ToME4 usually fight it out for #1 and #2 on the Roguelike of the Year awards and that's because they are both bloody good and worth your cash.

This is pretty cool news. It's taken, literally, years, but we finally have a Nine Dots game on Linux! Congrats to the devs and I hope the result is reasonably bug free and playable.
We actually covered Outward on the Funding Crowd #44, back in April this year, noting that Nine Dots promised, then failed to deliver on GoD Factory for Linux and that the appearance of Outward on Kickstarter probably signalled the end of any hope of playing GoD Factory on our beloved penguin.
Nice to be proven wrong!

This article is a cracking way to finish your GoL career, Munts. That was an epic read and since PM was covered before I joined you on the Funding Crowd team, this one has come out of left-field for me and I'll be giving this a go in the near future!
And thanks (again) for inspiring me to join the Funding Crowd team back in 2013!

I backed this on kickstarter and so many bad reviews have outlined so many flaws and issues that I've yet to even download the game or play it! It's pretty sad to see a legacy like this fall flat. I'll play it eventually, but there are so many more interesting titles vying for attention right now.
Right! Back to Mushroom 11!

Kingdom, A Sidescrolling Strategy Game Released For Linux, Some Initial Thoughts

Ah, right. I thought they were little churches. So that's how I got my upgrades. Cool. So what do the big statues do then? I've found a guy with a sword and and with a hammer. Presumably worker upgrades? But if the shrines/churches are the key to better buildings, how do your workers get upgraded? They seem to have three levels too.

Quoting: JudasIscariotIf by "shrines" you mean those little brown buildings you find out in the wild then those allow you to unlock stone construction and more tower upgrades along with more castle upgrades.

I got this tonight on a whim and spent five hours straight on it. The tactics are little obtuse, but this is waaay more than a Facebook game. As mao_dze_dun points out, it's a new style of game and it's definitely worth two pints of lager. I agree with Liam that the graphics aren't bad, but they're not fantastic either. They do a job.
But the strategy! Lots of subtlety around how far you expand your borders. Too far and neither you nor your vassals can get to the action quickly enough. Too small and the horde isn't thinned out before it reaches you.
Also, archers gain you money, but towers (which consume an archer) don't, but are almost immune to attack. A tower on the outside of your wall is better than inside (which is counter-intuitive) because it doesn't have to shoot over the wall.
Leave a tree between you an a camp for as long as possible so that you have a nearby source of recruits. If you chop the tree down, the camp vanishes and you lose recruitment capability.
And the balance between builders, soldiers and farmers is tough to balance too, particularly given the big hordes every ten days.
No idea what the shrines do. Nor the churches. I'm also uncertain what unlocks the tower upgrades you get later on. Was it the number of builders I had, or is based on the day? No idea.
So, it's a bit of a learning curve, but I survived until day 39 just there and I only have only one regret. I need to go to bed now, cos it's coming up 1am... :-)
No worries though. I can be a queen again tomorrow. Er, king. Hail to the King, baby.
