Puppy Arcade - Retro Gaming Live CD
5 March 2014 at 10:24 pm UTC

You made me google Wii emulation and it came back with this incredible project - http://dolphin-emu.org/. That was news to me. Looks sweet. I'll check it out later, for sure.

But nope - doesn't look like Puppy Arcade incorporates it.

I have an old arcade cabinet which I've been putting off renovating as a MAME setup. Sounds like I have no excuse any longer...

New SOMA Teaser Trailer From Frictional Games

Excited for this one, with a tinge of caution after the slightly disappointing Machine For Pigs. This looks superb. Like a cross between The Thing and the original System Shock.

Project Temporality looks like Braid in 3D. Great selection of games. Can't wait!

Shelter & Pid From Might and Delight Are Being Ported To Linux
4 March 2014 at 2:03 pm UTC

I wanted to buy Shelter when it came out, so this is great news. I hadn't heard of PID, but it looks superb. The animation is jaw-dropping. Two essential purchases, methinks...

Toy Soldiers: Complete May Come To Linux If The Interest Is There

I can't stand Wine. I've had precisely zero success with it, except for a vaguely disappointing success with Half-Life 2 years and years ago. I'm not interested in investing hours of my time for a second-rate experience. If there's no native client, I won't be buying it.

And yep, I have to agree with Minj - if the dev hasn't done their research on their target markets, it shouldn't be on us to say "yes, please" over and over. The need for that approach is diminishing rapidly and unless it's a AAA title that I'm desperate for, I'm not going to play the begging game.

Dust: An Elysian Tail Hits 1 Million Sales, Linux Stats Included
3 March 2014 at 4:19 pm UTC

I loved this game. Finished it - an excellent 12 hours. The voice acting was a high standard, I thought, so I'm not sure what annoyed you Babits...

You know, 1 million sales, 1% is Linux - that's 10k sales, £11.99 on Steam. If half of those were from the Humble Bundle and we ignore them completely (which is a bit unfair), that's still £60k in sales. It couldn't have cost anywhere near that to port, so I hope this is a developer who sees some value from the platform, even without the "Steam Machine" promise.

3089 Futuristic Action RPG Updated, Better Graphics
1 March 2014 at 8:22 pm UTC

I played the first for about an hour, but didn't like it. There seemed to be no plot, just an open-world sandbox. The graphics were also too Minecraft-y for me.

Something about 3089 clicked for me though. Once you start seeing the sky-scraper bots, it's like you've accomplished something. The underground race that contact you appear to be hinting at something greater too. There's just more substance to 3089, I think. And the grapple-hook / hyper-board combo is just superb fun. I didn't realise how much I'd missed grapple hooks since playing Quake 2 all those years ago. Every game can be made better by a grapple hook. Probably.

That planetary sweep was practically photo-realistic! Incredible. Nice find.

3089 Futuristic Action RPG Updated, Better Graphics

It was a lot of fun last time I played. A bit of a learning curve, then you'll be hooked.

To put this game into perspective, I played 9 hours before I gave it a rest (and for various reasons, haven't been back). I played Portal 2 on Windows a couple of years back for 10 hours!

So, yeah, despite the basic graphics, it's got a nice retro shooter feel, tons of loot, a variety of missions and a sporadic, but not-terrible plot. Worth a buy.
