Proton Experimental prepares for NVIDIA DLSS, optional NVAPI and more game fixes

Interesting. I played Red Dead Redemption 2 in multiplayer with the Proton Experimental until the day before yesterday.

Yesterday there was the update for it. Was downloaded directly when I wanted to start the game. After the update, the game quit with an error message in the Rockstar Launcher. After clicking away the error message, the launcher continued to run endlessly without launching the game.

I then set it to version 6.3.4. And with that the game starts again flawlessly. I then played yesterday for a good 3-4 hours without problems.

It is interesting because the changelog under version 6.3.4 says the following:

QuoteFix recent 2K Games launcher update

And under the Experimental version it says this:

QuoteAll changes from Proton 6.3-4.

Well. But still really cool that RDR2 can now be started directly from Steam without problems.

Switched to kisak Mesa fresh a year ago:

With the latest Mesa PPA and Proton Experimental I am able to play Red Dead Redemption 2 - even the Multiplayer. Out of the box. Nö further tweaks needed.

Metro Exodus from 4A and Deep Silver has officially released for Linux

Quoting: EikeLinux users like "give us big native games!".

Publisher gives big native game, Linux users like
* "It's not on Gog, I wont buy it!"
* "It has been on Epic store, I won't buy it!"
* "It's got an NVidia logo in the intro, I won't buy it!"
* "I already bought it months ago when it was Windows exclusive, I won't buy it!"
Not quite correct ... if the publisher had released the game on Steam as originally planned, instead of making it Epic-exclusive for 1 year, then you would have been able to
a) been able to play with Proton from the beginning (much easier at least). And
b) the native Linux build would probably have come much earlier ... precisely because Steam offers the infrastructure for it (Epic and the others just not).

Therefore, the publisher's decision meant a big disadvantage for Linux players in terms of availability of the game.

Well ... in the meantime it's on Steam. But I was so pissed off at the time that I still notice it today. I didn't buy it when the Windows version was released on Steam (to play it with Proton). And I won't buy it now either. Even though one copy more or less doesn't make a difference. For me it's a matter of principle.

Valve tweaks Proton Experimental further to get Red Dead Online running on Linux
22 December 2020 at 7:37 am UTC Likes: 1

Yesterday I wrote that at the Proton github-thread for RDR2:

QuoteHere is some positive feedback. I installed it again after a few months and tried it out.

Without any launch options or workarounds the game starts up to main menu from where I could also start and play the online mode (Free Roam) without any further action. Was just for 20 minutes in online mode. The single player was also running so far. But the online mode never started and always gave me an error "(0x20010006)".

Proton Experimental
Linux Mint 20
Ryzen 5 3600
AMD RX 5700 XT
Kernel 5.8.18
AMDGPU + PPA kisak mesa fresh (20.3.1-kisak1)

I am impressed. :)
