PCGamingWiki Looks At XCOM and Civ V Linux Ports
3 July 2014 at 9:51 am UTC

Quoting: BestiaThe performance drop for XCOM is big. Several people in linux_gaming subreddit wrote that they get only half of the framerate of Windows version.

http://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/29kyxg/pc_report_xcom_enemy_unknown_on_linux_43_drop_in/

One guy posted screenshots comparing Windows (124 fps) and Linux (43 fps).

For this sort of statement there needs to be more detail. I did originally get a huge performance drop, but now notsomuch. I swapped out lightdm for kdm, which for some weird reason caused a huge increase.

What GPU, what driver, what compositor, what wm, etc. etc.

Eminence: Xander's Tales An MMO/RPG Trading Card Game Coming Soon
1 July 2014 at 8:41 am UTC

Quoting: KelsI haven't played trading card games, what are the better ones for Linux so I can maybe try one out?

It's single player with no additional card purchases, but Card City Nights is pretty decent.

Quoting: KelsAside from which, I like the idea of more MMO for Linux, especially ones that aren't tied down to AAA-style graphics. I like something a bit more cartoony, which is why I enjoyed WoW back when I played it.

Wakfu is on Linux, soon being added to Steam. It has interesting an unique classes, turn-based combat and player-driven economy/politics.

Whatever Happened To Torchlight On Linux? UPDATED
26 June 2014 at 7:12 am UTC

Quoting: DrMcCoyRelatedly, the Giana Sisters devs stated (on the Steam forums, a few days ago) that their promised Linux port has been outsourced as well, since they themselves are busy with Dieselstörmers. I just hope that goes well.

As long as the "port" means making the current codebase cross-platform so they can maintain the port themselves, it should be ok.

Just A Friendly Reminder: Don't Buy A Game Until It Is Officially On Linux
24 June 2014 at 6:28 pm UTC

Quoting: kalinI buying a lot of linux games without playing them. I'm using only linux os.
Is this mean my money go to windows developers ??? :><:
I expect some serious discussions about that in steam forum

Basically yeah. If you don't play it on Linux within the first few weeks, it defaults to being a Windows purchase.

Trolling Delays Linux Release Of The Stanley Parable

Picked this game up a while back, so the dev already has my money. If a Linux port should still happen, I look forward jumping in again and seeing what paths I have missed in my previous few playthroughs.

As for the folks saying devs should grow a thicker skin... I say no, the "community" should stop being a bunch of pillocks and hold each other to higher standards. Call out this sort of behaviour when you see it.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown Released For Linux

Quoting: edoI thought the desktop environment (or whatever retated to it) does not affect the performance.

I believe the culprit is the compositor. In order to play "Sir/Madam, You Are Being Hunted" I also have to run openbox, but for a different reason - mouse issues.

Hey all. Just discovered something regarding performance. I'm running Manjaro (Arch-based) with KDE, and with or without compositing the performance is terrible. However, if I switch the window-manager to openbox with "openbox --replace" it improves a lot, even on High settings.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown Released For Linux

Quoting: GuestIt’s weird they didn’t bother making a 32 bit build. (Not that I care, I switched my Arch install to 64 bit three years ago, and my 32 bit Atom netbook is quite limited for gaming!)

Edit: BTW, anyone got it to work under Arch?

I'm on a 64 bit Manjaro system, which is Arch-based, but I don't know how far-removed from Arch it is. Anyhoo, the game works for me.

Steam Marines Squad Based Procedural Death Labyrinth Finally Lands On Linux
19 June 2014 at 11:24 am UTC

Quoting: CoolHandYou mean, every single turn-based strategy game with squads of space marines vs. aliens in a space ship... Yeah, sounds about right to me. The Space Hulk board game was the first time I saw that concept, and all this other stuff seems like derivative works. This seems too much like the original for me to be able to enjoy. Just like the Iron Tower trilogy was too much a ripoff of the the Lord of the Rings for me to enjoy. But to each his own..

Premise vs execution. J. Michael Straczynski:

QuoteConsider this sequence: male meets female; they fall in love; they struggle to overcome forces against them; male dies nobly. Is this "King Kong" or "Romeo and Juliet"? The answer for both: yes. How you handle the details is up to you.

Finally!

XCOM:EU is one of the few games I managed to just lose myself in for weeks. I played through in normal difficulty and then twice in a row in hardcore Classic mode. I've been holding off on buying the Enemy Within expansion till the Linux port was ready.
