Had a good time with this over the weekend. I actually enjoy the mine, sell, repeat stuff and was happy once the game opened up an I could just explore and buy all the upgrades and find the secret areas.

Quoting: tuubiWait, aren't Metroidvanias supposed to be platformers? I mean, this looks nice but isn't that stretching the concept just a bit?

Usually it just means the progression/story is set in an open world, but new areas (usually with new bits of story) are accessed by acquiring new skills.

Other example of non-platfomer Metroidvania is Aquaria.

One could argue that even Slime Rancher has some rlements of the genre.
I guess we've got the next "roguelite" on our hands. This is stretching the concept beyond the point of usefulness.

It's like we're running out of genres, and soon there'll be like three to choose from.

Agreed. Genre descriptors should not be references to other games. Roguelike, metroidvania, soulslike, and one that has thankfully died off, doom-clone.

Aspyr have been diversifying their market a bit, trying various things. Business-wise this is maybe smart, but this does seem to mean their AAA Linux/Mac ports are way less prolific than Feral, and I'm a bit worried that we won't be getting future ports of e.g. Borderlands 3 as a result. Might require another cookie bomb.

Quoting: Doc AngeloEh... this seems to cross the border between fiction and reality for me in a very wrong way. I don't think I want to play this.

I guess it strikes a similar nerve to Unmanned where you play a drone pilot.

EDIT: Looking at it closer now it looks more like it's playing it straight, blissfully unaware of the horrible thing it depicts. Unmanned specifically set out to make a statement.

Quoting: Purple PuddingIt reminds me of Her Story, a game I'd love to play on Linux...

I once asked the dev of that if there'd be a Linux version and he said he'd be interested, but there was some issue with the video player used. I guess it's a limited third party thing.

I enjoyed the original Spatials, and this one is shaping up to be everything that one needed to be for true greatness.
