Money good.
Facebook... pure evil.

Money is money, though. No matter where it's from. ;)

Not if there are strings attached to that money. The worry is Facebook using their money to control Blender like a puppet.

I guess the point of a -donation- is that doesn't come with strings attached. If Facebook wanted to control Blender, they could just throw a few million at the developers to bribe them into accepting a job offer...
That's the thing with corporate donations though.
QuoteChecking in on the Blender funding page, they're now hitting €116,507 a month but it's not clear if the Facebook monies has been added to it yet.
Even if it isn't, topping 200k a month is peanuts for a company like Facebook, but it would make all the difference for a team like Blender's. "So, did you like our little warm shower? No strings attached, you know, but if we like what we see, there might be more where that came from..."

Not going to happen if the lowest model comes at USD 580.-. Usually that directly translates to €580.-, so I doubt you'll see anything below 600 Euros, and much less five hundred, anytime soon. Add to that the bot resellers, and you're in for a long wait.

X4: Foundations gets a 4.0 Beta with the 'biggest free update so far'
20 November 2020 at 11:14 am UTC

I'm curious to see where they're headed with the changes to "online" mode they hinted at... requiring my email address as a login sounds like something I do not want.

I mean, I do have an account at Egosoft, and they do have my email address in their database, so why send it over the net every time I want to play the game?

Will I still be able to play the game offline, single player, the way the X series was conceived originally? Does the player have access to the same content if he or she decides not to play online? The last time I tried, I did not; I had to patch in the additional game starts, resulting in a modded game status. Without "ventures", access to several resources was severely limited, as was crew experience.
On top of that, the implementation as is is nothing more than a glorified random generator–you "send" your ship "online", and after a while, it "returns". So why even pretend?

That was before Split Vendetta, and I haven't played X4 since; although I too have the collector's edition, I don't know if I will give this game another go.

Seriously, I loved the X series, I have played every version excluding the one that shall not be named, but I'm severely disappointed with the way Foundations turned out and continues to evolve. I really want to like it, still do, but I'm just turned off every time I read the latest announcements.

According to the Rocket Labs web site, launch has been postponed to no earlier than November 19, between 01:44 - 04:34 UTC.

EDIT:
Launch happened at 2020-11-20 2:20 UTC

I recently discovered Eco, no idea how this managed to slip past my radar. Been playing it from shortly before the big 9.0 update to until around patch 9.0.3, when something broke; I don't think it was the patch itself, but something in between the kernel and Mesa. So far no combination of old/new/bleeding edge versions managed to get the game working again. I even gave it a try with both Proton and Wine, to no avail, so I'll just sit back and hope it will fix itself one day...

The other game I've been playing extensively for the past month or so is Avorion, which I immensely enjoy, and have been on and off for the past few years, mostly on though ;)

EDIT: Was missing a zero

The gnome is piggybacking on an already planned launch with 2 other payloads. Besides, it's all going in low earth orbit where space debris aren't really a problem (they de-orbit themselves after a while).
According to the Rocket Labs website,
QuoteThe DRAGRACER mission will test the effectiveness of new tether technologies designed to accelerate spacecraft reentry and reduce orbital debris at the conclusion of space missions. TriSept has completed the integration of a pair of qualified Millennium Space Systems 6U small satellites, one featuring the tether drag device and one without. The controlled spacecraft should deorbit in approximately 45 days, while the second spacecraft is expected to remain in orbit for seven to nine years
Emphasis mine; that is quite a while to cause mayhem. Not that I expect it to, but still a significant amount of time even though it is "only" a low earth orbit of 500 km. The ISS flies at or below that altitude...
IMO LEO is precisely where space debris is most of a problem; of course it would be bad to lose a few geostationary satellites, but I think it would take only one or two significant collision events generating more debris to effectively deny use of LEO.

Quoting: Purple Library Guyso the kids get to go to space. I mean would that be cool or what? Kids never get to go to space, but they're the ones who would really appreciate it.
I wish I could like that comment more than once.

Just about everything has been sent to space by now, from microbes to grown-ups... but never any children, who are indeed the ones dreaming of going to space.
I mean, I still do dream of going to space one day, but how pale in comparison is that to a child dreaming.

AMD reveal RDNA 2 with Radeon RX 6900 XT, Radeon RX 6800 XT, Radeon RX 6800
30 October 2020 at 9:35 am UTC

Prompted by some of the comments in this thread regarding the majority of gamers, even on Linux, using Nvidia, I found that I needed to take another look at this sites' stats:

https://www.gamingonlinux.com/render_chart.php?id=920&type=stats

$ echo -e "AMD: $((152+130+59+52+50))\nNvidia: $((114+112+83+75+61))"
AMD: 443
Nvidia: 445

Of course I'm only looking at a single source that is most certainly biased, and even then only at the top ten graphics cards, and in October of 2020, the "majority" is indeed still green.

I will probably fall out of that top ten some time early next year–depending on how fast RDNA2 can make their inroads–, as I'm considering upgrading from my current 'pole position' RX580 to an RX6800 (non-XT) that probably won't even see the top twenty for the first half of next year at least... once the initial hype is over and prices hopefully come down a little. USD 580 (EUR 500 at current exchange rates) likely means a store price of EUR 650 or possibly even more after duty and taxes, which means its actual cost is closer to about USD 750-ish, and that is something I am definitely not willing to spend on any graphics card.

Analogous for "board power"–I can't say I'm comfortable with 250W, that's about 20% more than what I'd like to stay below. However, the RX580 is still holding up most of the time even when throttled to about 50-75%, so I'd hope to see the higher efficiency of RDNA2 make a definitive dent in the power curve. Summer temperatures the last couple of years meant no power hungry games for a few months; and the choice of a 40°C room, or only playing tetris for a while, is another thing I'm not comfortable with.

I'm definitely curious to see the idle power draw; the RX580 reports 33W at the minimum, which I find ridiculous to say the least, and my only hope is that it's in fact a display error from hwinf... although it really doesn't look like it, the whole system draws 70W on idle, where I'd reasonably expect maybe 40 at best, to no more than say 50 worst-case.

Oh, that is both sad and good to hear at the same time. I'm only a sporadic visitor to WoS, mostly for the nostalgia, and it would have been sad to see it go.

However, now that I've taken a bit of a look around the "new" site, I am thrilled to see that at least somebody seems to have a bit of a sense for what is helpful in web site design, and what is not. I'm now in the process of updating my bookmarks... thank you very much for the updated link, and a big shoutout to the new maintainers of the old traditional layout!
