An interview with Ken VanDine, Ubuntu desktop lead at Canonical

QuoteUbuntu users aren’t the critics of snaps, and I’d argue that users are less concerned with how they get their applications.

As a Ubuntu user since 06.06 snaps are probably the biggest misstep up there with MIR and we all know how well that NiH-project turned out.

My biggest gripe with snaps are that the user experience of snaps is so much worse than DEBs or flatpaks. On Ubuntu 22.04 it took 15 seconds to start Firefox on my old laptop, fifteen seconds. I replaced it with the flatpak-version of Firefox that actually starts in a reasonable time. 6 years and no meaningful improvement to snaps start up times, great work, super focused on the user experience.

Oh and it keeps the three(!) latest versions of all snaps, last time i checked that was a hard coded number. Thanks Canonical, i don't need my disk space anyway, just fill it with old snaps. Oh while your at it maybe you could mount all snaps as loop devices just to make a mess? Cool.
And i _love_ the snap folder in my home directory, just love it, because that's the only folder where sandboxed snaps can write to, such an elegant solution.

So yes, Ken, Ubuntu users are critics of snaps. Before 22.04 i just left snapd be and moved on, nothing important was "snappified" so i did not care, that changed big time when an application i need and use daily as my main browser, Firefox, became much worse by being a snap.

I'm sincerely hoping that none of Canonicals gaming efforts are being wasted on snaps, if that is the case they can just save their time and effort and not do anything at all and Ubuntu users will be better of for it.

Sorry for the rant, just frustrated with how bone headed Canonical can be when it comes to their pet projects.

Castlevania Advance Collection works on Steam Deck, despite what Konami say

Konami posted the same announcement on Castlevania Anniversary Collection but not on their other Classics Collections.

Hopefully just a misunderstanding of SteamOS/Proton on their end.

Stadia announces even more games coming, Borderlands 3 free for a few days on Pro

Looks like ArtPlay managed the impossible and ported Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night to "Linux" after declaring it too much of a hassle during their Kickstarter. Maybe it's just that the middleware they used works on Stadia? Or the big pile of cash offered by Google...

Card City Nights 2 will release with day-1 Linux support tomorrow

What a nice surprise, enjoyed the first Card City Nights and had no idea a sequel was on the way!

Check out the Valve presentation from Unite Europe, major Steam Client redesign to come

Hopefully the redesign will include tabs. Using Steam sometimes feels like using Netscape Navigator in the 90s with one window for everything and randomly popping out new windows when you click on some links. Tabs would be cool Valve, can't stay in the 90s forever.

PAYDAY 2 is currently free for the first 5 million people who grab it on Steam

Quoting: YasserAll DLC's is free now?

No. They are removing all DLC from sale and replacing it with the Ultimate edition that contains all DLC. If you own Payday 2 you will be able to upgrade to the Ultimate Edition for a cost that varies depending on the DLC you already own.

The game they are giving away now is not the Ultimate Edition and does not contain any of the DLC that cost money before.

Games Republic, the store owned by 11bit studios is shutting down

They canceled all the orders for Civ VI and those who bought it got the game removed from their Steam accounts and a refund, at least according to later posts in that reddit thread. Sure it must have cost a bit to issue refunds but not enough to have to close the store unless they were hanging on a thread already.

Games Republic, the store owned by 11bit studios is shutting down

A bit sad to see Games Republic close shop, but not very surprising. It felt like a very generic store with a pretty weak unique selling point in the user curated stores. Very small library of games, even more so when it came to Linux games, and the same prices as everyone else on indies and AAA games. I don't think they ever gave me a reason to shop there instead of Humble Store (Steam + DRM-free + charity), GOG (DRM-free), Steam (convenience) or Itch (the weird indie stuff).

Maybe the lesson here is that if you don't offer anything special people might take their shopping elsewhere.
