That's not what valve gets though - through key-sales on other platforms (for which valve still covers the infrastructure-cost without seeing a cent of the revenue!) and lowered % at bigger sale numbers it's likely more towards the 20% overall.

And the other thing is: it's not only infrastructure that has to be covered, but also the development of the offered tools an services.

With all rightful critique to valve/steam, but one simply has to admit, that the services and user experience offered by steam is way ahead of any of the other stores - which is probably the (or at least a big) reason why both users and developers tend to prefer steam over other offerings. And as "value" is always subjective, that fact speaks against the "overpriced" argument.

Ask basically all "premium" car manufacturers, many OEMs, Apple, furniture brands and so on - if you step outside of highly competetive and price sensitive areas like sustenance or low-cost/noname brands, 10% profit margin is all but "unheard of"...

For a graphical package manager frontend, that makes perfect sense as those are targeted towards to less experienced users. As long as there still is a way to decide to remove those packages in CLI, i'm fine with it tbh. i don't like that the option is removed in APT, but i think it's now a flag that has to be passed on invokation? Given that you should rarely need that, thats kind of still ok, albeit too much idiot-proofing in an area where idiots should not be doing stuff ^^

With the steaming pile of garbage they released, i really hope take two will go down hard and painful and blow as much money in the process as possible.
Good luck to the teams behind re3 and reVC - it should be obvious how that has to play out, but unfortunately, judges/laws/courts and common sense are not always the best of friends :/

Fwiw, Valve does have the luxury of fixing any potential driver issue with AMD ( Mesa )

With Nvidia, driver issues can only be addressed by Nvidia so i don't think Valve can improve that for them. After all game works with vkd3d-proton.

This - and i really hope they don't start to implement whacky extra-code-paths for proprietary driver shenanigans or something like that...

Too be quite frank, since plasma matured there is little to no reason for choosing almost any other DE.
Plasma is fast as hell while being fully customizable and having more than enough eye candy, you can mimik the behaviour of almost any other DE while being either more performant or more feature-rich. Plus, the KDE-Apps are among the very best in most cases imho.
So i tend to agree with Nate ^^
Given, i'm not saying the other DEs don't deserve to exist, it's always nice if someone has passion for something and thus can bring out new great ideas! But from a standpoint of choosing a "default-DE", KDE probably is the best bet for vendor-customization while keeping compatibility.

And with new funding from Valve, it can only get even better :D
