EVERSPACE 2 out now, devs focus on Proton for Linux - Steam Deck optimizations planned

Quoting: CorbenAnd to show Rockfish Games know what they are doing, and they are actively supporting Linux via Proton:

The videos in Everspace 2 are using Media Foundation codecs, normally Valve does re-encode them for us, and ship them via pre-cache, so they don't run into legal issues. But those videos don't work at first, it needs some time for Valve to re-encode and ship them.

Not in Everspace 2, the videos (especially new ones that haven't been seen in Early Access, so nobody could have triggered the re-encoding process on Valve's end yet) work from the start! This is because RFG has re-encoded them, and checks if the game is running via Wine/Proton. If so, they use VP9 encoded videos via Unreal's WebM player. On Windows the WMF player is used.

Unfortunatly the WebM player in Unreal has a memory leak: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1128920/discussions/6/3823034248723581631
But even here they are actively working on resolving this issue! This is support for gaming on Linux!

Didn't notice memory leaks in Wine 8.5. But video cutscenes didn't work at all in the past and started working in the pre-release version at some point.

Not sure if it's a game bug or something with radv or vkd3d-proton, but in this release version any time someone is shooting one of those red beam rail guns, whole screen becomes half covered in red and it gets stuck that way.

It's probably closest in bringing back Freelancer vibe (even if not quite fully) than any other game so far. I wonder how single player Star Citizen will compare in that sense.

They literally have the option in the game UI, but for whatever reason disabled it and it can only be forced externally.

QuoteFor players on other stores like GOG, it does make things more complicated, since Steam is the only store to officially support a translation layer like Proton. However, you can try with Heroic Games Launcher.

Just to point out, GOG version of the game works very nicely in Wine as long as you enable the expected dxvk / vkd3d-proton.

Oh, and esync or fsync are recommended too for better performance.

Report: Steam Deck to pass 3 million sales during 2023

Quoting: 1xokIf Valve were organised differently, they could sell many times more. Even notorious console players are very positive about the Deck when they get their hands on one.

Not sure this logic makes sense. Even if they aren't as huge as MS, Valve make a lot of profit. Really a lot. Managing even Deck size hardware business requires a ton of resources and production overhead, and they already manage that, meaning they can afford it. Scaling it up now isn't the problem if there is enough demand. They can do it gradually also, to avoid over supply.

Quoting: pete910To be honest Shmerl that's shocking perf on that hardware. It's not even that graphical intensive going on those screen shots.

Even Cyberpunk 2077 performs better, lol, but it's actually very demanding - see GPU usage at 100%. So it's not just doing nothing, but I assume it's not really optimized well given the engine is UE4.

Quoting: scaineThe performance isn't great, but Everspace 2 is one of the more graphically intensive games I've come across. The seamless transitions from cave complexes to open space, or world surface is incredible - a truly, breathtakingly beautiful game. If you don't turn on any upscaling (which I doubt Schmerl did, given his previously stated opinion on upscaling ), it's a very, very demanding game.

Yeah, that's without upscaling :) And I agree it's a beautiful game. I wonder what happens on lower end hardware though. It might be an issue without upscaling there.

For whatever reason, the game disables the option to choose between DX11 and DX12, but you can force DX12 mode with -dx12 parameter.

Quoting: 1xokThe game does not reach 60FPS, at least in WQHD with a 67xx XT, even with DXVK/Proton. Is the performance the same under Windows? How are things on the Deck? As a German, I would like to support the studio. Unfortunately, we don't have that many in Germany (any more).

Performance isn't spectacular, but still good enough for me on RX 7900 XTX (Testing GOG version):

dxvk (DX11) mode:

vkd3d-proton (DX12) mode:

I agree though, that it's not high for such kind of hardware. I guess limitations of the engine show.

Quoting: tpauPorting it to UE5, would that help?

Probably, but it's a major chunk of work, so it's not worth investing the effort if it already works well enough in UE4.
