GOL Cast: I Am So Godly in Reus
11 January 2014 at 9:55 pm UTC

Quoting: Quote from minjSo was this gameplay recorded on a windows box or have you managed to get it on Steam on Linux?
I got access to it for some reason. The material I post is always recorded and edited on Linux. I haven't even had an installation of Windows for a long time.

Introduction to Livestreaming on Linux Using Castawesome
7 January 2014 at 1:15 pm UTC

Quoting: Quote from hardpenguinWhy not just bundle all necessary libraries (FFmpeg etc) in proper versions along with Castawesome? :3
I've thought about this, but for now I've been relying on software provided by the distribution for maintenance reasons.

Quoting: Quote from MagevaniaWhat about the badwidth requirements for these "broadcasting" tasks?
It's completely dependent on the settings you use. I have 0.8 mbps upload speed and I can get a stable stream with 856x480 resolution (with 1280x720 input resolution), 400k bitrate and 25 FPS framerate. If your upload speed is less than 0.5 mbps or if you are on an unstable mobile connection then streaming might get a bit difficult.

Quoting: Quote from pwburkhardtIs there a way to record and save the videos witout streaming for a normal Lets Play?
Castawesome is meant to be a livestreaming tool and I don't think it would make a very good desktop/game recorder, but SimpleScreenRecorder works for that. I've made an article with a tutorial video about it some time ago here: http://www.gamingonlinux.com/articles/linux-game-recording-the-process-behind-creating-gol-casts.2421

I use that for the videos I post here on GOL and I've also been making LP videos on my personal channel using it for 5 months now. The videos are in Finnish, but they should give you an idea what the end result will be like: http://www.youtube.com/user/MrSamsai/videos

Quoting: Quote from LuckiMaybe i don't get the point of your program, but as you already use Simple Screen Recorder to record this video, why don't you use it also for livestreaming? With OpenGL-recording you don't even need to set up a screen region.

SSR is already great for capturing video, so i think, Linux needs a better way to arrange the video with overlays, pause-screens, moving text for the background song, … - like xsplit.
Maybe you can hook up into SSR and focus your program on the streaming.
Well, SSR actually supports experimental livestreaming on its own, I just find the UI too clunky for that. Also, I started this project before I had any knowledge about high quality multimedia apps like SSR (back when I recorded all my videos with the horrible RecordMyDesktop) and since then I have been keeping this project alive while waiting for someone to make a better livestreaming application. I think I lack the skills to make anything similar to XSplit or OBS.

Quoting: Quote from minjIs there anything to gain by using avconv rather than ffmpeg?
I don't think there is. As far as I know they are pretty much identical.

Quoting: Quote from stanThat’s nice. I’m a programmer and not afraid of long command lines, but finding the good parameters for ffmpeg can take a lot of time. Can Castawesome record only a window? Record sound without Pulseaudio (with ALSA)? Save to disk instead of livestream? (Yeah I’m not really interested in livestreaming at this point!)
It can do both windowed and fullscreen video input and audio input through Pulseaudio, but sadly it supports only one audio device at a time, unless you use null sinks. Saving the recording to disk is something that can be done and I've actually done that few times to test the video quality, but it's not officially a feature, because tools like SimpleScreenRecorder do that a lot better. I might add that into the project for testing purposes though.

The Wine Development Release 1.7.10 Is Now Available
4 January 2014 at 8:17 pm UTC

I haven't been interested too much in the upcoming/new Windows-based games. I mainly use Wine to run few older games that I doubt will ever be ported like Skyrim, Fallout-series, Halo: Combat Evolved and so on, so if Wine can manage running those with minimal issues I am fine with that and the new releases that support Linux.

Game Developers Talk Up OpenGL At PAX Prime 2013
25 December 2013 at 12:45 pm UTC

Quoting: Quote from BcsAs soon most major game devs switch to Linux/OpenGL, Micro$oft will forbid OpenGL in Windows, or they will just shut down Linux entirely, or patent all PC gaming, to get royalties for that, regardless of the OS. They have the money/support for that, so...
That won't happen. OpenGL support is included in the graphics card drivers, which are controlled by their respective companies (mainly AMD, Intel and NVIDIA) and not by Microsoft. They can't shut down Linux either, because they don't have any control over it. Patenting PC gaming? Won't happen, since Microsoft didn't invent PC gaming. In fact, people played "games" on PCs even before Microsoft released their 4K Basic on Altair8800.

And lastly, there are laws against such anti-competetive practises.

GOL Cast: Exploring The Troll Caves In Ravensword: Shadowlands
21 December 2013 at 6:46 pm UTC

Quoting: Quote from stanWhat about the story/quests? Is this WoW-style “go kill 10 wolves” or is it a bit better? ;)

Also, has anyone tried it on 1st gen Intel HD Graphics?
As far as I've played the quests aren't only mob grinding, there are some fetch quests and the like. Of course it's not terribly complex, so don't set your expectations too high.

As for the Intel HD Graphics, I get 40+ FPS on my 3K, so I guess it could possibly work on the first gens, but don't quote me on that.

Quoting: Quote from ShmerlI see the Android version was already sold on Humble Bundle. Will they distribute the Linux version through HB as well?

UPDATE: It's already in the Humble Store (DRM free) for $12.49. I just didn't notice it before:
https://www.humblebundle.com/store/p/ravensword_shadowlands_storefront

Good RPG natively on Linux DRM-free? Instant buy.

On a side note, Shadowrun Returns is in the Humble Store now as well (DRM free).
Excellent! I'll slap that link onto the article in case someone doesn't check the comment section.
