Steam Controller updated, you can name it, take configs with you, adjust the light & bleep and more

Quoting: ziabiceSo if I had to choose between the XBox 360 controller and the Steam Controller, the latter is actually the best choice? Even if I dual boot or use WINE for some games?
I'd pick the Steam Controller unless you're very used to the XBox 360 already. I use my Steam Controller with and in front of my desktop computer all the time, whereas my Logitech F710 (a very nice XB360 style controller) has been gathering dust as I could never get used to it for anything other than platformers.
Wine is a bit funky since you have to run the game through Steam for the controller to work and since the games I've tried didn't pick up the game specific mappings (likely an issue with Wine), you have to change the default mapping instead - but it works. Windows should be the same: as long as you're using it with Steam, no problem.

Quoting: micmonSadly I still can only play a single game with the controller (Portal 2) and Valve nerver responded to my issue... :(
Have you tried installing python3-autopilot in order to fix the uinput access issue?

Looks like the PAYDAY 2 developers have begun working on the SteamOS & Linux version

Quoting: PicoboomPayday 2 was the reason I originally kept a windows partition. I had about 800 hours on my old Xbox 360 version and over 1,000 hours on the PC version. I'm hoping the Linux save files aren't compatible with the PC files. It will give me a good reason to start over from scratch.
You mean the Windows version, right? I'm assuming you're still using your PC to run Linux.

Great that it's working! It was such a shame that you couldn't enjoy this awesome controller so I'm glad to hear you can now :) I'll venture a guess and say the python3-autopilot install probably fixed it, as I was having a few issues before I installed it as well (though nothing as bad as you experienced).
Now You're Playing With Power; have fun! ;)

Sure, but I don't think it has to do with the device itself, it sounds like an issue with the Steam client to me.
Here's my udev file anyway:
Quoting: /lib/udev/rules.d/99-steam-controller-perms.rules# Valve USB devices
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="28de", MODE="0666"
# Steam Controller udev write access
KERNEL=="uinput", SUBSYSTEM=="misc", TAG+="uaccess"
# HTC Vive HID Sensor naming and permissioning
KERNEL=="hidraw*", SUBSYSTEM=="hidraw", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0bb4", ATTRS{idProduct}=="2c87", MODE="0666"

I should note that I also did the /dev/uinput access trick by installing python3-autopilot ("sudo apt-get install python3-autopilot" ).

Quoting: Friendly TrollDoes anyone else have a completely non functioning Steam Controller? I have Ubuntu 15.10, Steam Beta client and everytime I go to play a game there are no community configs to select from. I can't even save my own configuration, because it says something like "another configuration is already in process of saving it" which is of course not true.

Also sometimes when I quit Big picture mode the entire desktop freezes. Only sudo service lightdm restart helps.

I don't have anything like that, but I do get the already-saving error, which just goes away if I try again. My guess would be that the permissions on your steam folder could be messed up. Have you checked that your user can write to ~/.steam/steam/userdata and its subfolders and that you have enough disk space?

QuoteAnother good thing they are planning is to actually allow some configuration of it for desktop use, with an on-screen keyboard. They specifically mentioned people using it for a media PC

Well, the on-screen keyboard already works in desktop mode (press the stick) and I think the media controls buttons on the key select screen are new, so it's pretty much here already :D

Better config sharing and community configs for non-Steam games is awesome; access to a joined pool of all your configs would be great as well, so one can have, for example, the same config for all one's FPS games.

Quoting: CybolicYes, yes, but what about Total WarHammer?! :D (I know that's not the title, but it should have been)

It is coming, just no idea on when:

Oh damn! I completely missed that! I just kept seeing the Windows logo on the Steam pre-order page and that made me not want to look more into it out of sheer disappointment. Stupid Windows logo... *grumble*

Quoting: BonsWhat to you guys think?,If you see this from a average consumer perspective for once, and don´t look with you Linux glasses on.

3 Reasons Steam Machines are better than Sony and MS consoles and 1 day someone will remind "average consumers" they at least have a choice now (which is better than no choice)! [...]
Precisely. I think everyone has to remember to see the bigger picture here. This is much less about Windows vs SteamOS/Linux and much more about getting rid of proprietary console platforms and exclusives and levelling the playing field for the consumer; meaning (in the future) if a game comes out, it comes out for your "PC" and for your SteamOS console, no more vendor lock-in and, hopefully when Vulcan arrives, no more bad "console ports" (like the latest Batman).
