Quoting: Cr1ogenif they want to force Linux games to work with Steamplay because they do not use windows directly? I think it's a step backwards in the fight that Valve has been doing for Linux users

do you think?
there are games with OLD linux ports.
BLACK THE FALL https://store.steampowered.com/app/308060/Black_The_Fall/
this game has a linux port, but it is very old and the newer windows version looks complete different. the developers wont answer to any questions and they dont delete the linux version

so what you gonna do? now you can install the win version and maybe it works as it should

linux needs market share and for that you need games you can play with ONE CLICK

Quoting: GuestThis is great. Anyone know if it's possible to have both native and proton versions installed at the same time to quickly switch between the two for testing?

Hope I can use proton for Rocket League to finally get workshop maps working. Performance might be better too. Rocket League's Linux performance is pretty poor compared to Windows sadly.

change directory name of the game and steam wont see it (but close steam first) and you can install it again

Quoting: Guesti bet tomb raider 2013 and rise of the tomb raider will run even better now gonna have to test this

rise of the tr has VULKAN and runs pretty good. i dont think, that it runs better with an extra DXVK layer. but maybe someone give it a shot and makes a NATIVE / PROTON comparison video. same with HITMAN

i definitely try METRO. the linux ports rly suck and have less options, than on windows
since there is no WAR THUNDER VULKAN update i think the Win version also could run better now (depends on anti cheat)

and i may can finally play DEAD ISLAND on linux
i complained a few days ago and hoped for forcing steamplay on native ports
and for some reasons 12 is better than 6 and iron snout wont work for me

but first i have to finish some games and make free space

Quoting: mylkai bought Dead Island Definitive Collection
Dead Island Retro Revenge works with proton
DI + Dead Island: Riptide Definitive Edition wont work. they worked with ubuntu 16.10 but after i updated ubuntu it doesnt work anymore
i wrote a mail to the developers AND the publisher.
developers just said, that they look into it.
publisher said: "sorry we just support ubuntu 16"
i wrote them back: "but this game is just 2yrs old, can u please give support"

i never heard from them again!!

so here is what happens to SUPPORT OF NATIVE VERSIONS
they also show you the finger

Well, I agree That Techland is far away from giving a good support for Linux (but seems that it's also bad on Windows, so maybe is not only with us...), but in this case the problem is on Mesa side:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=107990

I'm able to play both games by building Mesa without glvnd support. My workaround simply requires to add in to the linker path the location of my built libGL.so.1.2.0 (i.e. I keep using the other system wide Mesa libraries).

in my opinion, it is still the responsibility of the developers to make the game workable, if they know the problem

you can not ask the buyers to compile their own mesa
either change the game, so it works with new mesa versions, or help mesa to fix it. they werent willing to do anything

my point was, that nobody can expect lifetime support for a game. so it doesnt really matter if you buy a PLATINUM proton game, or a native version, because a new game update can break the game and so can a new linux distro/driver update and then they say "sry we only support old distros with old drivers"

Quoting: WendigoAnd this is exactly the reason why I would never buy a Windows game even if it has platinum status for Proton.
There is just no guarantee that the game will still work in a few weeks / months / years and if you get issues in the future you are left in the rain since the game was never made to be run on Linux.

ONLINE games with anti cheat
i dont think they make witcher 3 unplayable with proton
i also dont think, that bethesda updates the buggy new vegas (they have enough problems creating a new fallout ENGINE)
you also can play GTA5 single player. so if you just want to play the story, youre good to go

i bought a few windows games and i played them with proton. if they wont work tommorrow i wont regret it, because i had fun and there are just a few games i played twice in my life

just use your brain before you buy a windows game, but dont denigrate proton at all

btw. a little story about "support" of native games

i bought Dead Island Definitive Collection
Dead Island Retro Revenge works with proton
DI + Dead Island: Riptide Definitive Edition wont work. they worked with ubuntu 16.10 but after i updated ubuntu it doesnt work anymore

Steam Play recently hit 500 Windows games rated as Platinum on ProtonDB

Quoting: XpanderThere are actually more platinum ones as some people report issues with really outdated drivers or have distros that doesn't have file description limits increased to use esync.
Well, hopefully ProtonDB will apply some limits to what entries can do to a rating when they're using rather outdated specs.

or just take GOLD+PLATINUM

DOOM only has GOLD and its whitelisted
all wolfenstein also just have GOLD

i bought some gold games like prey, ryse and batman and they all work OOTB

btw do you know when its posible to install the windows version even if there is a native port?
both metro just suck on my machine and i wanna try them with proton.
or dead island wont start and i also wanna try with proton
Try this: https://github.com/Holston5/Native2Proton

i like 1 click solutions
so no date when steam has it built-in

AMD have announced the AMD Radeon VII GPU and more at CES 2019

by the time games need more than 8GB, u need a new card anyway because even the 2080TI will be to slow

GTAV uses I think 10GB or so at 4k on max settings, its pretty old. So certainly games use that vram today.

In saying that 8GB would be just fine for AMD if they use their VRAM caching tech whatever it was. Unfortunately they need 4 chips to get the bus speed needed.. HBM2 does not come in 2GB modules, which is quite unfortunate.

GTA5 is a very bad exemple. this is a PS3!!!!! game. far away from 4K and rockstar gives a shit about PC. it often feels like they put no effort in PC games. have you ever played GTA with keyboard and mouse? its a pain in the ass, especially flying

i am pretty sure, if they make it again, with a better engine and better PC optimization it wouldnt need 10GB
so lets stick with modern games please. and from what i read and saw on yt even the 2080 has troubles with 60FPS in 4K and VRAM is not the bottleneck

Quoting: mylkai bought a 1 year old RX580 8GB recently for only 150€. it is nice to have 8GB vram, but not even assassins creed needs it

dxvk quite clearly benefits from more VRAM. Not all games use it fully, but it can be used to avoid extra RAM to VRAM copying.

but still: 8GB are very future proof
