Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation inches closer to a Linux release with Vulkan
30 December 2018 at 5:30 am UTC Likes: 1
no one uses win8 and win7 support ends with 2019, so its pointless to make vulkan, because they have it on win7. no one will officially support win7 in 2020 because it is a security risk.
todays VULKAN in 2015, when win10 came out could have change developers minds, but now is too late
but VULKAN is still open source and the switch already has it. maybe the new playstation supports vulkan. that could make a difference. it should be easier to port games from PS to PC

Quoting: jarhead_hQuoting: BrisseQuoting: pete910To be honest I hope they optimise the **** out of their Vulkan render to show DX12 up :D
No qualms in waiting for the Linux port if that's what they do!
Their Vulkan renderer has been available for a while on Windows as an alternative to d3d12, and IIRC performance is similar. Great for Windows 7 users who don't have access to d3d12.
And I think that's actually kind of the point. Microsoft will never backport DX12 to Win7/8 but the truth is with Vulkan it's not needed. As long as drivers keep showing up supporting Win7/8 Vulkan can keep people from having to switch to M$'s bloated spyware.

lets add proton and say half
witcher, gta 5, no mans sky, raft, kingdom come, tomb raider, Frostpunk, Football Manager 2019, Quake Champions, etc
maybe even more than 50%

Quoting: KimyrielleHaving roughly a third of all bestsellers isn't bad. Other platforms have exclusives too, and even Windows players cannot play 100% of all blockbuster titles, when they are console only. We could do with more AAA titles for sure, but overall, we're doing good. Not great. But good.

Some thoughts on Linux gaming in 2018, an end of year review

maybe the beta. i just use stable. maybe i try it tomorrow. if it really works, i am curious what feral does
performance could be better, but i played this game with 30-50fps with proton and constantly 60 on windows
i think it is very playable because it is not an actiongame
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ju7_yy9VtJk
i think it would be better if they are focusing on action games like tomb raider

Sure, Tomb Raider is a very beautiful game and I feel bad for not being more excited about it. I bought it, of course, but have yet top play it... I've also purchased a stack of small indies that was fun for a handful of hours, but nothing I couldn't live without, to put it like that.
I had never played any Tomb Raider before and was suprised how much fun I had when playing the reboot. Give it a try...
About the indies, I wonder what you're into if you didn't find any gems there.
Quoting: BeamboomSo actually, yeah when I think about it, this year does indeed feel like another step down, from a very subjective point of view. Overall 2018 feels more empty!
I guess it's mostly about how you you feel about Proton. If you like it (or have great hopes in it raising the Linux player numbers), it probably was a very interesting year. If not... not so much. But I do like that Feral seems to do the opposite of giving up lately! :)
Thinking about Feral... Maybe they push ports a bit to avoid beeing overtaken by Proton. Imagine they did port Hitman 2, and everyone in the target group already owns it...
It might be a good idea for them to specialize on games with anti cheat.
protobdb says that they cant play hitman 2 online. that menans no achievements and no events, like holiday hoarders
either a native version or ioi fully supports proton
I didn't know that, but isn't it funny that the new Proton version is said to fix those issues?

VK9, the project that aims to support Direct3D 9 over Vulkan has hit another milestone

minimum: DirectX: Version 11

Quoting: massatt212Quoting: mylkaQuoting: ShmerlQuoting: jensAre there any heavy weight DX9 games?
The Witcher 2 is quite heavy (Windows version is using DX9), but it has an OpenGL wrapped port by Virtual Programming already.
this game runs pretty well on 5yr old cards. if you have an older card, you wont have vulkan
heavy weight DX9 games are nothing for todays cards. even cheap ones like rx570 can handle them easily
Quoting: massatt212he needs to get games running to catch valve eyes, or he can be a scammer or he could just decide to abandon the project, valve needs to see hug progress before supporting him, and their are tones of games that still use DX9
i dont think this means that more games will work, but you could have more FPS.
if they can translate DX9 to VULKAN, they can translate DX9 to OpenGL and thats what proton already does
how many games would profit from VK9? skyrim
are there any other dx9 only games with bad performance?

he has 60FPS on ultra with a 1060. VR9 woudlnt help him at all
Their are some games with Graphical Glitches
Like Strider and Darksiders 2 Public Beta

is discord allowed to use proton? is itch allowed to use it? can gog wrap it around witcher 3 and sell it as linux version?

Particularly good to hear that they already have working versions and that they use Linux. Makes up for the delayed release and no word so far. Now we just wait until it actually happens, because by now we are already too used to promises without results (GOG, cough cough).
doesnt Tencent own discord?
