sounds nice theoretically, seems to be not so easy in practical
there is ubisoft with a very good anvil engine and an own store an they still give a lot of money to valve
there is CDProject, with an own store (DRM free of course) with a very good REDengine. they cant compete with steam. they still give valve a lot of money with witcher 3 and they will do it with cyberpunk
there is EA, with an own store, with a very good frostbite engine. they cant compete with steam
so yes, the cut to epic is less, but i think, that they also sell way less copies, because i have a huge amount of games and all of my friends in steam and i wont get another client, just because the developers get more of my money
the human being is fucking lazy. they dont want change and as long as the games on epic arent much much cheaper than on steam, no one goes to epic
and if they start with exclusive titles like EA than F you epic and all your developers. i wont support that and i hope/think that much PC gamers have the same opinion. PC gamers are different from console gamers

Unreal Tournament. And an engine that they're not exactly going to make difficult to use with their store.
are you serious? who plays UT today? i think valve has more gamers play csgo, dota, tf2, left 4 dead
engine? everybody has an engine. ubisoft has more than 1 engine, vavle has an engine, ea has an engine
there are so many engines on the market. i think we all agree, that ubisoft has the best open world engine with assassins creed
and theres cyberpunk coming with its own engine. witcher 3 was beautiful til assassins creed origin came along
the most beautiful games dont use unreal engine
kingdom come. best forest.... cryengine
valve just needs to improve their engine and make left 4 dead 3, or a new dota, or cs and epic + fortnite have absolutlly no chance
and im pretty sure they have half life 3/portal 3 somewhere in case of emergency
Unreal Tournament is a famous brand, and Epic can move more money into it again if needed.
And that you're disregarding the Unreal Engine like that pretty much shows how little you understand of why Epic is such a major player.
and valve has more than 1 brand. as i said
l4d, cs, dota, tf, portal, hl
vavle even has more genres
i dont disregard the unreal engine, but it is 1 of many. nothing special
I know this is going to sound harsh, because text can be taken that way, but I mean this as something more akin to a constructive comment: you appear to have "Valve blinders" on. The original comment was about if Fortnite disappears, what do Epic have? They have Unreal Tournament. The original UT was up there with Quake3. It's really not hard for Epic to build more success around Unreal Tournament, and use that to continue to leverage their own store. And yes, that keeps them quite happily in competition with Valve.
Unreal Engine is quite special. Again, I don't think you quite realise just how special. Epic have additionally added a marketplace for content to add to it - something developers quite enjoy, and Epic are going to make it very easy to get their engine, develop on it, create a game with it, and publish to their store. That entire developer toolchain will make it very attractive to indies, and that's before the lower percentage cut taken by Epic. This is why Valve should be a little concerned.

but they have far cry, assassins creed, watch dogs, splinter cell, beyond good an evil, etc
epic has 1 free2play game......
i know there are a lot of fortnite player BUT most of them are on consoles. maybe children, who cant afford full price games, or have to wait til christmas
the PC market ist very small compared to PS4.

Epic are giving away Subnautica the coming weekend. Since it not reasonable to think that the dev is just giving away their game to promote the Epic store, it is Epic pulling their wallet to bring in people. If they do it for this game, they likely did it for others as well.
ubisoft also gave away a lot of games. prince of persia, splinter cell, watch dogs

valve could write something in the contract, that they have to make it playable for steamOS and like max. 10% less perfomance
i even would benefit developers if they support proton with 0,2% or something like that and another 0,2% if they use VULKAN
i mean vavle spend a lot of money for DXVK and proton. of course native ports are better, but for the start i would be very happy with more games run like wolfenstein, if they dont wanna make a native port

Quoting: LeopardQuoting: GuestPush the Linux Support even further. Lower the Costs for Developers that make Native Linux Versions for Steam. And maybe go fully back to Game Development. To this day i still wait for: Half-Life 2 Episode: 3 , Portal 3 , Left 4 Dead 3. OH and one big idea if Valve is really gonna go back into Game Development: Vulkan Support. And maybe add Vulkan Support to existing Games. At least if possible of course. For Dota 2 it worked at least. So why not also for CSGO , Left 4 Dead , Team Fortress , Half-Life, Portal? I mean it never hurts right?
Lowering costs for games have Linux versions is a bad idea.
We might end up with bad performing ports just like VP did with Moto game. Many half assed ports done just for lowering costs.

correct me if im wrong, but did epic have so many good games in the past?
on PC they had UT of course, bulletstorm, and........ i think thats pretty much it
they made a lucky punch with a F2P comic pubg rip off. i dont think they have another hyped game like that in the next few years
i dont think anybody leaves steam. epic takes less money, but who say, that epic has the customers? who says that everybody moves to epic, if the games cost the same? would you go to epic just because ubisoft, etc can make more money
so if the games on epic arent significantly cheaper, than on steam, why would anybody install another client? and epic only would also be a high risk for developers
epic doesnt have their own exclusive games, they wont get 3rd party exclusive games and they wont be cheaper than steam
not really a good selling point to install another client
AND if everything's falling apart.... steam still can lower the cut down to 20 or 15%

4- are games cheaper, because epic just takes 12%? ubisoft games cost the same on uplay and steam.
yes, ubisoft had an bad time with self publishing, still they are doing it anyway, most triple A companies are doing, epic may have a chance to compete because many companies will give up leaving steam if steam change their cut, the economics of scale will not compensate the cost of self hosting

i get it, but whats the point of openness, if no one uses linux? as i said. if MS makes games unplayable tomorrow, what would pc gamers do? switch to linux, mac, or buy a console?
i cant tell.
it is not that easy.

2) they need proton, or else they wont get the linux gamers.
3) they just have 1 game as a selling point. fortnite. i dont play fortnite

Quoting: NeverthelessQuoting: mylkaQuoting: GuestQuoting: mylkaQuoting: GuestThat explains the recent Valve royalty cut...
Valve is very greedy and lazy. And sadly they don't show signs of improving. They will only really try to change their ways when it is too late, as is always the case...
you say that after all they did for linux (client, steamOS, wine/proton, dxvk, mesa) for free
Well, they're doing it because it benefits them. Yes, it's of benefit to the general GNU/Linux community too, but I wouldn't quite say "free" (Valve would expect something to come of it, or they wouldn't invest). Subtle difference, but important: and no flame wars, this is a good showcase of how a company can invest in open source software for their own benefit, without trampling on user rights.
Anyway, Valve have done plenty of shady things as well. Let's not forget the paid mod fiasco. They've steadily reduced their own effort in managing their own marketplace (trying to make it community run basically means they don't have to do anything except gather the cash). That point is going to stir a few emotions I'm sure, but it's good business sense really: get others to do the work for you. I wouldn't put it quite to the extreme of greedy and lazy, but neither are Valve going to put in more effort than they have to.
Oh, and Valve do try improve because they know that if they don't, the success with Steam that they've had won't last. They've been working to give themselves a direction, a way out of stagnation. I think there's even a video of Newell saying that somewhere.
Please please please people don't read this as attacking (quite often people do). I'm not. Valve aren't golden heroes, but neither are they murky villains. They're just doing good business, and obviously GNU/Linux is, or Valve believes has the potential for, good (desktop) business.
i dont think they make the big bucks with linux
of course they wont lose money with their linux support, but if linux would be so profitable, than gog, ea, uplay, and epic already had linux support for their clients and/or their top sellers like witcher 3, battlefield, call of duty, assassins creed, fortnite, etc
so dont underestimate the effort, because the other big players just dont care about linux
Valve needs Linux, because it's bound to be open. No one can own Linux and shut it down like Windows walled gardens. So Valve invested in openness! Maybe Epic sees that now too...
i get it, but whats the point of openness, if no one uses linux? as i said. if MS makes games unplayable tomorrow, what would pc gamers do? switch to linux, mac, or buy a console?
