Feral no longer porting A Total War Saga: TROY to Linux, citing less demand since Proton

Quoting: DebianUserExactly what i was afraid of, and why i can't say if Proton is a good thing or not.

on the one hand you have 1 game from feral and maybe some other devs not porting their game to linux

on the other hand you have 1000s of games you can play, including the ones they would have ported.

imho the answer is pretty clear

Quoting: F.UltraConsidering how quickly they managed to port Wolfenstein Youngblood to not only Linux but also ARM Linux shows that those rumours that they had DOOM running natively on Linux way back where highly likely true.

Yes exactly, having the driver ready for ARM is one thing, showing an ARM port of an AAA game is at least equally impressive (and serves indeed food for lots of rumors :)).

switch has ARM hardware and it has AAA titles all over
afaik switch runs freeBSD which is kinda linux
so i think its not that hard to make a switch ARM TITLE run on LINUX ARM

The switch port was handled by an external company though, Panic Button, the demo on Linux ARM seams to be inhouse?!

does it make any difference? the game and all of its source codes are property of bethesda, so why would they do it all over again?

A new Valve game for the Steam Deck? It's not out of the realm of possibility

even alyx isnt index exclusive, so i dont think so

a linux only game would be funny, but valve is too open

Ubisoft are keeping an eye on the Steam Deck, will release on it if it's big enough

Quoting: mylkai think they should make it more clear, that they do not sell a WINDOWS PC and you may not be able to play some games and you wont be able to install windows software like you do on windows
Nobody expects a thing like a Nintendo Switch to be a Windows PC. I don't think they need to sweat that a whole lot.

but switch owners expect to play their switch games
steam deck players wont be able to play all their steam games
I agree with you that it's something that needs to be addressed head on, but it seems clear that compatibility will be indicated in some fashion (that's how the rumours started in the first place). I think that Valve's aspiration to remove all barriers without specific game dev intervention is unrealistic.

However, the fact that not all PCs can play all PC games has been known to PC gamers for decades. My current desktop can play every game I can throw at it, but my ultrabook, my NUC and my now-retired Sandy Bridge machine simply can't. It is a pain that there are additional technical barriers if game devs don't make their products work on this machine, but the existence of titles that can't be run shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

you cant play a game, because you hardware is too old. thats sth all pc gamers know

but this is a new kind of "the game dont work"
hitman absolution comes in my mind. the games DRM makes it impossible to play with proton

it should run smoothly if you take a look at the system Requirements. thats new to windows users and valve should make that very clear

yes it is a problem you can easily fix with a DRM FREE .exe (the game was free on gog. steam still has DRM), but still could cause some troubles for customers

The Valve Steam Deck, lots of excitement and plenty to think about for Linux gaming

kinda feels like we were beta testers for proton

did valve say when they send decks to youtubers, etc to make reviews?

Quoting: KohlyKohlI'm not as convinced as you are. Also, what happens when they break their system, which is much easier to do under Arch? I really hope Valve has an easy way to reinstall SteamOS on these.

download an image. copy it on an SD CARD. put it in the deck. press some buttons and it installs everything

shouldnt be that hard

Quoting: g000hI'm waiting for Microsoft to offer Valve a free Windows licence for each Steam Deck, or even better - Pay Valve to put Windows onto the device.

since it is an open device you may can install windows by yourself
but i think steamos is very optimized for it, so maybe even better performance with proton, than with windows on it

Quoting: slaapliedjeI think the real question is how many new games will we get as Linux native when developers want to make games for this new 'console' and can finally convince publishers there is enough interest?

depends on how many devices they sell
but i dont think a lot of AAA titles will change anything since they wont work on it anyways. i am kinda sceptical about doom and control. do they really run smooth on it?

tomb raider? metro? i hope we get some independent reviews soon
