The GamingOnLinux Podcast returns, in a special Co-Op News Punch episode
4 October 2020 at 10:02 pm UTC

I had forgotten how much I enjoyed these podcasts!

The new Co-Op format was fantastic. As the discussion focusing on game streaming played out, I felt an interesting and very informative synergy was created. Two heads are better than one!

Really looking forward to the Distro Podcast. This subject is something that I have grappling with the last couple months.

Comet 64 is an upcoming programming puzzler set in 1984

As someone who bought a used Commodore 64 in December 1985 ($300) and still has the original "Programmer's Reference Guide" (400+ pages), this game resonates for me. It brings back fond memories of trying to learn to program on the C64.

WARNING:
If you do not want to listen to some old guy talking the "I remember when..." routine, please stop reading now!

My experience with Commodore BASIC (6502 Microsoft BASIC):
I spent weeks typing in the code from a book named "Compute!'s Data File Handler for the Commodore 64". Most of the modules were written in Commodore basic, but some of the routines were in machine language. At this point in time I had a 1541 Disk Drive (170 Kb disks).
Compute!'s Data File Handler for the Commodore 64 - Example
When I was finished, I had a nice database management system that I used it for a couple different projects at home and at work.

Since I am getting nostalgic (You were warned!)

My early experience with C64 gaming:
I would spend a couple hours typing in a machine language game from Compute!'s Gazette.
Compute!'s Machine Language Games for the Commodore 64 - Example
When I finished typing in the program, I had a game I could play!... but I could not turn off the C64 because I had no storage device and would lose the program. Eventually I got bored or wanted to use the computer for some other project and lost my game.

OK... That's it! I will stop now.

Over 8 years in development later, Factorio is properly out now

Quoting: EhvisThe only discount you can get is the Humble Choice discount on the humble store.
Factorio has been on my Wishlist for quite some time. When I added it to my Wishlist, I took my usual approach for games over $20.00; "I will wait until the next Steam Sale event and buy it at a discount". I have yet to see it discounted (granted, I could have missed it). Factorio has now left Early Access. Quite often when a game leaves Early Access it is discounted a standard 10%. Not Factorio.

I am going to have to come to terms with the fact that if I want to play Factorio, I must pay the full $30.00 price. No discounts on this game.

BTW: I do not doubt it is worth the price.

As always, my two daily plays:
CS:GO - I just play with bots. I have found AI players to be much friendlier than RL players.
Shotgun Farmers - Working towards getting my "Prestige 1" achievement. Still have quite a ways to go though

Have also been enjoying:
Undermine - Undermine came out of Early Access this week and the improvements are fantastic! Liam's article on the 1.0 update is here
Monster Sanctuary - I participated in the Kickstarter campaign and have enjoyed this "gotta catch em all" game. I am enjoying it, but have to admit that I am sorely tempted to purchase another game of this genre, Monster Crown. So far I have resisted the temptation, but I feel my resolve weakening. Liam's article on the Early Access release is here

UnderMine is a challenging dungeon-crawler that's worth digging deep for - out now

Been following this on GoL for quite some time and finally got around to buying it during the Steam Summer Sale. For the last month I have making a run down the mine shaft once or twice an evening. I usually get killed by the first boss, but I am getting enough gold to upgrade my equipment on the majority of runs. The variety of loot (relics, potions, curses and blessings), enemies and bosses you encounter make each run quite unique and exciting.

The only other game that I have played that has the player construct interactive sentences is Oh...Sir!! The Insult Simulator. The purpose of the conversation in these games is totally different (insulting someone vs. establishing relationships), but this looks like a game I would really enjoy. Added to Wishlist!

11 years ago this month GOL was created, Happy Birthday to GamingOnLinux

Quoting: Liam DaweMy number 1 though, is of course, Steam coming to Linux back on 2013 because it changed everything.

The year that Steam supported Linux, was the year I joined. Unfortunately it took me over five years to discover GoL and join the fold. Wish I had discovered your website sooner Liam, but I am very happy to be here now.

Happy Birthday GoL!

I hope to get back to playing Iratus: Lord of the Dead this weekend.

I have really enjoyed playing this turn-based roguelike role playing game where you take on the role of The Lord of the Dead leading your undead minions into battle with the humans. Liam wrote a great review of the game here.

After over twelve hours of play time and many hours watching Let's Play episodes on YouTube, I feel as though I am just starting to get familiar with the beautiful interface, the complex mechanics and the fantastic builds that the game has to offer.

For me, CS:GO is one of the many reasons I will be forever loyal to Value. A great game that I play several times a week; although I do not, and likely will never, play competitively.

The cost of entry for this fantastic game: FREE

But, as we all know, Value makes lots of money off of CS:GO. Perhaps you are smarter than I, but I have spent hundreds of dollars on CS:GO skins. As illogical as it may sound, I KNOW that new Famas skin has been the reason my kill to death ratio is getting higher every game.

Give me a "Skin to Win" game any day... Someone else can play and pay for "Pay to Win"

Worms have invaded Golf With Your Friends with a big new 18 hole course
30 October 2019 at 4:04 pm UTC

I have been looking at this game for quite some time. It reminds me of a game I played on the Commodore 64 called Hole-In-One. Hole-In-One was a much simpler game, with a top down, low resolution graphics; but it had great "playability".

Thanks for the review. I have moved Golf With Your Friends higher on my list of games to be purchased during the holiday Steam sales.
