Thanks for the heads-up about Abzu. Played it today (over Steam Link + XBone controller) and it works great. That was the last remaining game in my set of "Family View" games (suitable for my 4 year old to play) to not work on Linux.

Had to do the shocked Smilie to see that you meant D: OS2, which is Divinity: Original Sin 2, I think. :)
Correct.

Yeah, I was also pretty keen to see what this month would bring. It's definitely a good value bundle: Eliza, The Hex, Frostpunk, Shenzen, Warlock, Pathfinder, all games I would enjoy. But none of these are on my wishlist, I already have a large backlog, and D:OS2 is taking most of my gaming time at the moment. So I should pause.
Last month I managed to get Two Point Hospital and Whispers of a Machine by trading unwanted stuff from past bundles. I might take the same approach this month.

Quoting: pskosinskiFrostpunk alone is worth $25 but honestly I'm disappointed with the bundle because no single game is something I would choose myself to buy if I could choose anything and I was sooo waiting for the bundle.

Great game. It seems I haven't played it since July, wow. There will be so much new stuff to see when I do eventually go back. Steam says I beat the game with all three characters, so presumably I will be able to access the Watcher right away.

The Humble Choice bundle is up for January with 12 games to pick from

SFV has people with heaps of hours doing online multiplayer. Possibly also a little grinding to earn in game currency for new cosmetics, I forget.
Personally I'd keep Whispers. SFV would probably be easiest to trade though.

Quoting: fenevadkanwhat 2 games do you guys are gonna skip out of the 12?I reckon Whispers got a good review from John Walker at Rock Paper Shotgun when it came out, maybe worth looking for that.
it is hard to decide, I narrowed them down to 3

Looks like a decent bundle to me, the big let down being SFV being unplayable on Linux (although I already have it anyway).
Barter.vg is an okay way to trade, but one problem is that most of the active users regularly get the Humble Monthly. So everyone is trying to get rid of the same stuff. That should improve as people lapse from Humble Classic I guess.
Regardless, this month I might try pausing and just trade unwanted games from last month for the couple I do want (Two Point and Whispers).

Some thoughts on Linux gaming in 2019, an end of year review

Thanks Liam for another great year of running this site!
With Proton opening up so many options I actually bought too many games this year. Next year I will be more disciplined with my purchases. Or I might have a moratorium for a bit as I finish some of the many excellent games I picked up this year.

Remote Play Together released out of Beta, big sale now on Steam

The idea is that if you play a game with a friend and enjoy it there's a good chance you'll buy it to play without that friend. Valve said devs who aren't happy with this can opt out.

Quoting: Xaero_VincentI'm surprised Valve is allowing people who don't own to play remotely with friends in Co-op. Only one person needs to own said game?
I'm also surprised that game developers are okay with this as well, since it means a friend can play without owning the game and thus less game revenue?

Humble Monthly will be changing to Humble Choice later this year

Yeah, I'm no marketing guy but it does seem like a strange way to position their tiers. It devalues the "premium" tier. IMO they'd have been better to shift existing subscribers over to the premium tier at the current price, and not even have a "classic" tier.
I was able to swap COD:WW2 and Crash Bandicoot with someone on barter.vg for Mutant Year Zero, which runs great under Proton. Doesn't look like a great deal on paper but I'm happy with MYZ for AU$18, if anything else in the monthly is any good that will be a bonus.
Not much time left to get it done in 2019. I wonder if they'll transition in November or December.
It sounds like we'll still be able to pause with the new system at least: "Pausing your subscription is fine, and you will not cause you to lose access to Classic for doing so."
Agreed, it's not at all clear whether this is changing. Presumably since they haven't said anything about this, it stays the same and the set of games changes every month?

Quoting: wvstolzingWhen you're describing 'the new ways to subscribe to us', it's odd to enumerate the obsolete way as 'the best way' in your ad. Besides the second paragraph could suggest that new subscribes could, after all, later switch to the Classic plan -- though not 'automatically'.
Better to put a big disclaimer to the effect that if your subscribe before the swithch, you get to have certain privileges. '!!!!ALERT: ONLY FOR THE LOYAL PRE-SWITCH CUSTOMERS!!!!!!!', or something like that.

Quoting: scaineI'll be pausing this month, for example, because the main reveal is COD:WWII which is "borked" on ProtonDB, and I've no interest in the other two reveals. But I'll be gutted if the remaining games are games I'd buy.

Quoting: g000hI'd like to understand what the game tiers are going to make available to subscribers. Is it a case where they will offer 15 games per month and then you choose 10 of them (if you are on the top "Classic" tier). Or is it the case that they offer 10 games per month, and you'd get all of them, even if there are titles in that 10 which are no use to you (e.g. Windows game / already own it / etc.)

Quoting: g000hAnother thing that strikes me: Surely this shift means that a lot of the Games Choices made available will not be fresh, new titles, but will be Repeats (from earlier bundles). If they continue with a set of only 10 or so every month, I don't see why this has to be the case. But as someone who has only recently (this year) subscribed, I'd be quite glad to get access to some of the stuff from past months (and non-monthly bundles) I missed out on. Still kicking myself that I didn't pick up Tyranny and PoE for AU$7 a few weeks back.
