Samsai - how did you get the fps counter in the corner? I've tried looking for info on this but have turned up a blank.

Thanks.

Quoting: Quote from scaineAnd yet the graphics are absolutely stunning regardless! Actually, in that thread, the lack of tessellation makes most of the textures look more natural. It's the framerates that I find pretty staggering. The fluidity of the game while producing such graphics is really nice. Very smooth.

It's crashed for me twice now, which is disappointing, but I'm about 5 hours in, so it's not particularly prominent. It's just a shame that you can't skip the two minute tunnel intro when you start the game up! Pretty infuriating sitting through that!

Also, akin to the good framerate is that it isn't frying my card either. I get noticeably higher temps from 'Sir, You Are Being Hunted' (a Unity game) where the graphics are not as detailed (but still beautiful in their own way).

I haven't had a crash yet, maybe I'm not in as far, I'll find out shortly! Totally agree on not being able to skip the intro.

Great link, thanks Xpander. I would never have known what I was missing (obviously!).

Can't say it bothers me at all really, I recently replayed all the Half Life stuff (1 and 2) and never once thought "wow, these graphics are bad". Quite the contrary. It must be a combination of not being an uptodate gamer (no Windows or consoles, apart from an original Wii) and being "older", ahem *cough* 8 bit *cough*.

Sorry Samsai, going OT again :P That's for another thread.

Apologies Samsai :'(

@Caldazar - I have replied on the new thread linked to above.

On topic.... played a bit more today. Set governor to performance and graphical slider to about 66% for best experience here. Can't comment on what effects might be missing or dumbed down for the Linux version as I haven't played the Windows version. I find the game immersive and fun and quite easy (which is what I like personally).

Quoting: Quote from CaldazarSo you shouldn't accept tolerate Steam's DRM just because it is more convenient but because you weighted the good Steam brings vs the bad.

I'm genuinely interested to know what you consider is "the bad" about Steam. In particular, what is bad about Steam's implementation of DRM.

Cheers.

In an ideal world DRM free would be great. Unfortunately we don't live in an ideal world. It's laudable to strive for it though, so keep striving if that's what turns you on.

As for Steam being bad, then that's nonsense. If there was no Steam I wouldn't be playing 'Metro: Last Light' (remember that, what this thread's supposed to be about) on Linux. I am and I love it. So... playing the game or the game not existing for Linux... hmmm, tough one. If there was no Steam on Linux then there'd be no game, end of. No DRM version and no DRM free version, nothing. If you don't like DRM, great (does any customer actually LIKE DRM? Think about it) but I don't want to hear your opinion of it on a thread for a game you have no intention of playing! Start your own thread about it.

And if Steam were to do an Android with SteamOS, then so what? You'll still have your flavour of Linux exactly as it was before SteamOS but with better graphic drivers and more users. You'll also have more CHOICE of games and more game developers. YOU will have lost nothing. I will have gained lots. Everyone's a winner.

I've played a couple of hours today and it's really good (IMO obviously :P).

Can't comment on frame rate other than it runs mostly smoothly, even when I turned up the graphics "slider" fully. Lowering the slider does make things smoother still and there's a noticeable drop in "sharpness" of graphical quality.

The only glitches were an occasional partial clipping when in very close proximity with another game character and an occasional slight stuttering in audio at the end of the transitions between "levels" (for want of a better description) where your character talks and "press any key to continue" is displayed.

Good stuff!

Hi folks, just registered, nice to meet you all :D

Downloading now at just over 7 MB/S, 13 minutes to go!

@OZSeaford - I've just upgraded from a GTX460 to a GTX660 and I'm seeing an improvement in fps of between 30% and 50% in the games I've tried. Unigine Heaven went from 27 to 40 fps at 1680 x 1050.
