Help with VPN
Expalphalog Mar 29, 2017
Linux amateur here, running Mint. With the US congress now authorizing ISPs to sell browsing data, I have been told that a VPN will be important to have. Any recommendations?

First off - my condolences, living in a de-facto police state must suck :(

Personally I recommend AirVPN
It's run by the Italian Pirate party and they care a lot about your privacy, there are NO logs anywhere and you get 3 simultaneous connections.

My referral link ( earns me some free vpn time if you register ) https://airvpn.org/?referred_by=169078

Clean link if you think that's iffy : https://airvpn.org/

The forum is active and the staff very knowledgable. It comes with an easy to use client ( eddie ), but if you need help installing vpn on your toaster or doing split routing* on you router the forum is a goldmine.

I spent a lot of time researching providers before settling on AirVPN, if your want to do research your self torrentfreak publishes an anual VPN provider survey;
https://torrentfreak.com/vpn-services-anonymous-review-2017-170304/

*) Reason for doing split routing is that some services such as netflix is very VPN unfriendly, though last I checked the airVPN server guys had beaten it - still I route around if anyway so I can get local subs :)

Not as fancy as what he ^ recommended but rolling your own VPN wouldn't be a bad idea either (if that is your thing). And VPS can be rented for a few $ a month with root access/ssh. There is a lot of information about OpenVPN, tuts to set it up and help in securing it. Though I will say it is aimed more for the techy or diy crowd.

For this solution to work said VPS need to be hosted outside of USA by a company with no affiliation ( ie not registered there, or owned in part or wholly by a company that is )

And the price is quite a bit different - most consumer VPN subscriptions are less than ~60€ pa. I can't imagine you can rent even a virtual server for that ;)

Github launched a privacy project that also has a somewhat more compact list of VPN providers;

https://privacytoolsio.github.io/privacytools.io/#vpn

Though strangely the list does not contain anything as to how each VPN provider adresses privacy of it's customers in the face of court orders, etc.
