I did read in this discussion:
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/57
that there is a compatibility list here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1DcZZQ4HL_Ol969UbXJmFG8TzOHNnHoj8Q1f8DIFe8-8/htmlview?sle=true#gid=0
and you can add your test here:

Kingdom Come: Deliverance - works perfectly, 35-55 FPS 2560x1440 and medium settings, GPU 100% constantly, looks good on medium though
Bioshock 2 Remastered - Runs, but gets stuck not taking input on the loading screen "press space to continue doesnt work"
S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl - Works great, 2560x1440 all maxed 150+ FPS

There is a list of minimum requirements for Proton at https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/blob/proton_3.7/PREREQS.md
Yet despite those minimum requirements, I have already seen people post their results with graphic drivers older than what is required. I am sure that it probably doesn't matter as much for older games that have worked for years under normal WINE, but it probably makes a huge difference to newer titles requiring the latest video cards working with Vulcan. While it does not specify Ubuntu 18.04 is required, that is the base system under the requirements. Many people may be using older versions, or older kernels that may not handle everything. Not to mention general issues such as RAM/CPU/GPU limitations of older hardware.
Because people are posting with below minimum requirements, obviously there are ways to install it, even if it means compiling from source. BUT, because they do not have the requirements, recent games that require newer hardware and drivers will fail even if they work on up to date hardware/software. Plus even old games can fall victim to performance problems.
Even on modern hardware with up to date drivers, it is possible for something to not be compatible with certain GPUs or even CPUs... and that may be the difference. (While this is something that Vulkan and other APIs try to work with everything, they are unlikely to be completely bug-free.)
Compatibility lists can give a general idea of how something works, but YMMV; in the end your computer is different, so is your perception of acceptable performance. Don't be surprised if something other people report as working doesn't or if something they report as broken works on your computer.

Crysis 1 needs Esyc off to work
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/178
Afaik Quake Champions is one of the games that needs "Stream Output" support on DXVK which is not implemented yet.
Yet , he claims that game should be whitelisted. Probably he booted , played 1 or 2 minute and called it it should be tagged as " just works "

I settled to huge 200k on then limits and haven't had any issues after that, with 25k or similar some games had issues like low fps or freezes
on arch linux (because arch has super low defaults)
in /etc/systemd/system.conf
change this:
DefaultLimitNOFILE=1048576
