I live in Poland and I am a programmer. At work I use MacBook Pro (2015) with intel i7, 16 GB of RAM, 256 GB SSD and some stock GPU Apple offers.
Currently my personal PC is 8 years old Asus laptop with i5 2410m, 10 GB RAM (2+8), 500 GB HDD and NVidia gt 540m.
I stopped to use it on daily basis about 1 year ago, now I turn it on only when I have to.
I would like to buy a laptop for myself to be able to work on it from time to time, but also to be able to play on it from time to time.
As I mentioned in the topic I can spend on laptop from 1.5 to 2k euro.
For me most important thing in this laptop will be it's size - My laptop is 17.3' and it's heavy - I don't want to make this mistake again.
So I hope, that whatever I will buy it will be minimum as thin as MacBook Pro (2015).
I also don't want a product, that is designed for kid that is 6 years, like all gamers laptops.
Currently I am writing a post from my wife's MacBook Air, but it is too small. Honestly MacBook Pro (2015) for me is perfect except GPU. I must say I like MacOs as well, however Apple products are too expensive, so I am not considering them.
Can anyone suggest some models that I should look at?
Based on the quick research in the internet I am considering:
- Dell 9570,
- ASUS ZenBook UX533FD
Could you suggest a laptop I should consider as well? Of course I plan to have only Linux installed, so it would be good if it will be possible to buy a notebook without OS installed and such a notebook will have good Linux support.
A few months ago I got a 13” laptop from Slimbook hoping to replace the MBP, but it’s a no go. The screen is too small for work, it has the stupid 1080p res which is a hassle in Linux and the build quality is just not comparable to the MBP at all. I like a few things about it, like the weight and USB 3 and the keyboard, but it’s just a completely different league. I was happy to support a Linux-friendly vendor, though.
The Purism 15 looks like a nice machine that would fit my bill (perhaps barring the GPU), but I’m just not up to the hassle of importing from the US ATM.
Sorry I don’t have anything to recommend, please do let us know if you find anything interesting.
