Please help me run Surving Mars/EPIC Games Launcher

I got the game for free a few days ago and I have since been trying to get it to run.

I installed the EPIC Games Launcher via the script on the Lutris website but while installing it gives a lot of fixme. type errors. It does install though, I am able to run the launcher, even login to my account, but when trying to install the actual game nothing ever happens.

I've tried using different combinations of settings and runners in Lutris but nothing seems to do anything. I've seen it mentioned on ProtonDB that Surviving Mars is a native Linux game and it even has good ratings, but for the life of me I cannot get it to run.

What do I do to get it to run? Please consider I've only been using Linux for a couple of months, after 20 years with Windows, so nothing too technical, if at all possible.

Surviving Mars is a native game if purchased via GOG or Steam as they support Linux.

EPIC games store doesnt support Linux and any title even if it has Linux support elsewhere will not have a Linux depot to download via the EPIC store.


Now protondb does seem to indicate it will work via proton on linux; so either the version of WINE/Proton used to install the epic launcher on Lutris is missing a fix, or something else is wrong.

Are you able to post the errors you get when trying to run/install surviving mars?

Well, now I'm even more confused. I don't know what happened or didn't since the last time I tried, but now it seems to install the game, despite all those errors when installing the EPIC Games Store.

I was not able to grab the error messages during the launcher install as the screen kept clearing itself, but I did get some logs. Please find the link attached.

For now, the game appears to be installing. I'll update this post as soon as something develops.

later edit: The game did install, but when trying to launch it hangs and then gives a force quit/wait error.

What store is your Surviving Mars key from? If it's from Steam or GOG, then you don't want to use the EPIC games launcher.

Traditionally, people would install Steam and 1 game into a Wine folder. You could try doing that with EPIC if that's where your copy of Mars is from. But I haven't tried it myself since EPIC is a bit anti-Linux and therefore own zero games from them.

That's a bummer. You might have a rough time getting it working. I would try installing the EPIC launcher inside Wine and then installing the game through the EPIC store after that. There might not be a lot of people posting help how to do that since you can download the Linux version of the game when you buy it through Steam or GOG.

I assume you got the free key, so nothing lost if you can't get it to work. I've only ever tried the epic launcher for Subnautica. As said before, it's not a simple install and start. First you need a proper environment to get the launcher to work (for which there is a Lutris script). Then you need a proper environment for the game to work, which may be different. It might be possible, but it requires some work on checking dependencies and problems. I don't know if the game requires using the launcher. If it doesn't it might be easier to fix.

I installed it via Lutris, under Pop!_OS, following the exact steps that guide lists, but sadly, no dice.

I'll give it another go.


later edit: Issue remains as described in first post. fixme errors, launcher install, runs, is able to install game, but when running the game it always crashes with a force quit/wait message.

even later edit: Well fuck me sideways and call me Lucy, launching the game directly from the exe (MarsEpic.exe, run with Wine Windows Program Loader) seems to do the trick. I was able to run the game, change some settings, I didn't actually go pass the main menu because I'm at work and I don't want to spoil it for me, but it seems to run just fine.

Here is how I did it for a few of the windows only titles they gave away:
- install epic game launcher via Lutris
- download and install game via epic game launcher into a folder of choice
- uninstall epic game launcher (has a tendency to break on updates anyway)
- open native steam, add the game to steam and chose a proton version to run it. (you can alternatively do it via wine or Lutris)
- enjoy
Would suggest to get the native version wherever possible though so we get more nice things in the future.
