I really don't get why you're so lenient towards GOG while Steam gets the maximum penalty for something I consider much less anti-freedom.

QuoteThat's why I think it's very important for GOG to start supporting Linux, then they'll be really the best distributor to support.

You're a huge step ahead. How about they stop removing Linux support from games first?

Taking away my right to decide which types of executables run on my system isn't s.th. I take as lightly as you appear to do.
As said, to me this is far worse than the level of DRM we see at Steam.
Why do you lobby them instead of Steam although they overall provide much less freedom and, again in contrast to Steam, are unwilling to move one inch towards us?
Shmerl Nov 11, 2013
GOG weren't unwilling, they are too slow, which I don't really understand. However their principles are clear - they won't tolerate any DRM. It's a huge difference from a DRM proliferating distributor. Each problem should be addressed. Steam is not even interested in dropping DRM, GOG however said they are working on enabling Linux support.

QuoteGOG however said they are working on enabling Linux support.

It is enabled, you're not getting this point. They are working on not taking it away from me? WTF, just don't do it!

Quotethey won't tolerate any DRM

as well as the Linux versions they get from the game devs. How are your digital rights not severly managed here?
Shmerl Nov 11, 2013
You assume that selling tarballs equals to support. It's not. GOG already explained they aren't interested in short term support. Look up that thread, there were a lot of details there. I think that short term support is better than not giving any Linux options though, but GOG apparently doesn't think so.
Caldazar Nov 11, 2013
No, I just don't give a crap if you support credit cards in the future if in fact you pick my pocket right now.

Adding Linux support where it lacks is no must. I understand if they don't do it because of economical reasons.
But they take away, that's a huge difference, it isn't even part of the same category and wasn't even addressed in their PR stunt.

That "taking away" is DRM while "just not adding" is not. Do you think otherwise?
What you and GOG label as "support", in contrast to just a tarball is - wait for it - convenience.
Does that ring a bell what you're giving away for what?

Quoting: Quote from Shmerlfabertawe: That's the reason why Humble Bundle became more questionable. However, there still is a difference between developers who sell their games strictly as DRMed, and those who sell them DRM free and additionally through DRMed distributors.

The point I'm trying to make is that developers that sell both DRM free and DRM versions of their game, irrespective of distribution channel, are still tainted by DRM. So ideally, if you take a zero tolerance approach to DRM, you should not buy DRM free versions from those devs.
Shmerl Nov 11, 2013
For me it's enough of they sell DRM free options. Same way I don't stop using Firefox because they release Windows versions of it.
fabertawe Nov 11, 2013
In that case you can't go preaching to others about the evils of DRM if you don't adhere to it yourself :P
Shmerl Nov 11, 2013
I don't adhere to your idea, since I don't find it useful. What I said above wasn't the same like your proposal to avoid developers who sell DRM free games in addition. Do you propose for example for open source projects to avoid Windows? I see no useful purpose in that. I.e. if they punish Windows users for the fact that they use Windows - that won't do anything good. You can bet that many switched away from closed platforms because they had cross platform options to chose from.
fabertawe Nov 11, 2013
Quoting: Quote from ShmerlI don't adhere to your idea, since I don't find it useful.

Exactly, you don't find it useful. What's the point of having ethics if you only apply it to the parts you find useless? It should apply 100% or not at all. Otherwise it's called hypocrisy. I'm not trying to have a go at you personally, I just want consistency from everyone.

Your Windows analogy is irrelevant, even if it was applicable. It doesn't matter what other people think or do or how it applies to anyone or anything else, the point is you are proposing such ethics, so you should live by them.
