HyperDrive GEN2 - Not All Ports Work
Cyba.Cowboy May 4, 2022
My System Info

Linux Distribution: Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS
Desktop Environment: GNOME 42.0
Graphics Card: GeForce MX250
GPU Driver Version: 510.68.02

Have you checked for system updates?: Yes

If this is not Steam, you can still give us a system readout using inxi with "inxi -SbCGxx" in terminal (please put that into Pastebin/Gist as linked above!):

You can note your issue below here

I am trying to use the Hyper 'HyperDrive GEN2' (18-port version) with my ASUS ZenBook Duo UX481FL, but only some of the ports (on the HyperDrive GEN2) are functional, when this hub is connected to my laptop via USB Type-C... For example, all of the USB Type-A ports and the Micro SD card reader work fine, but the HDMI Type A ports do not.

For reference, this is the product I am having issues with:
https://www.hypershop.com/collections/usb-c-hubs-and-adapters/products/hyperdrive-gen2-12-port-usb-c-docking-station

When I used to run Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, it was the same issue; I was just too lazy to do anything about it, plus all the ports I had a need for at the time worked fine.

I suspect that the first thing to do would be to identify exactly what ports my USB Type-C port can "see" when the 'HyperDrive GEN2' hub is connected to it... But I'm not exactly sure how to do that.

Any help or advice would be appreciated though.

Note any particular steps to reproduce it below here

Connected the hub to my computer using USB Type-C.

The link to the product page produces a 404.

Maybe the HDMI ports are some sort of USB displaylink thingy? That doesn't, or at least didn't use to work in Linux.

I fixed the link - it looks like they changed it...

I'm not sure what you mean by this, but is there some way I can check this?

The crucial bit of info here might be that the USB-C port must support DisplayPort Alt Mode (it's in the hub's specs).

Here's a thread that might be relevant: https://zentalk.asus.com/en/discussion/62143/asus-zenbook-ux481fl-displayport

I've never heard of "Alt Mode"... But according to that link you shared, my USB Type-C port doesn't support "Alt Mode" via the USB Type-C port; so in theory, my HyperDrive GEN2 wouldn't be able to run an external display / monitor via USB Type-C even under a Microsoft Windows-based operating system (which natively supports Windows-based operating systems).

That's a shame.

Thanks for your help, @damarrin!
