G'Day fellow tuxers……. Its your interim host here once again…….. Its a very rainy Saturday here right now…….…… This past week was good…….. My new controller arrived…….. And there was a nice WRC Steam Sale so I picked up WRC 8 and WRC 9……..

The weather has been a bit up and down this week…. Monday to Wednesday was really nice weather……. The sun was out and the temps were very nice for winter……. And then Thursday to today have been totally crap with rain on and off all day………

So the back half of the week has been spent inside playing games as well as playing with the fleabag inside…….. Being stuck inside did allow me to catch up on my backups and sort out my rom collection…….

Dick Trickles Racing Career: Part 28
NASCAR Dirt to Daytona: Part 28
Featherlite Modified Series Season 1: Race 6

Intro music…... Hello and welcome to Left Turn Heaven..... Im Murray Eastlake and today im going to be bringing you all the action from the 2004 Featherlite Modified Series: Round 6 of 11 here at Dennison Speedrome……..

Dennison Speedrome…….

Dennison Speedrome is 0.375 miles long and has 24 degrees of baking…… You need a good handling here here to deal with the high banking……. This high banked narrow track will test the patience of the drivers…. With 20 Featherlite Modified cars on the track for the race…… The chrome horn will be used a lot…... As this short track brings out even shorter tempers……

The Dick continues to dominate in the dirt……. As yesterday he racked up yet another dominate win in the Weekly Dirt Racing Series……. Hes still yet to find the winners circle here in the Modified Series……… Could today be the day????…….

2004 Weekly Dirt Racing Series: Round 6 of 10…...

After the fight last week….. I spoke to Dick to get his thoughts on what happened……. “Its very simple Murray……. [Luis] Rivas put his hands on me first…….. Now you dont put your hands on a Dick and not expect it to fight back like a spitting cobra……… And thats what I did……”

“And if I need to get physical out there on the track again today I will…….. I will have no issues putting anyone into the wall that deserves it……. And NASCAR seems to be ok with that…….. So as long as they dont do anything….. I will keep doing it……..”

Well there you have it folks…… Hes a very frustrated Dick…….. Can Dick finally get a modified series win???…….. Or will he be put into the wall???…….. Can Jason Sulivan extend his championship lead and get his fifth win this season????…….. Can last years championship William Anderson finally get in the winners circle to keep his title hopes alive???…… Or can Franices Lee or Joel York get a surprise win and cement their names as championship contenders????……..

Dont touch the sets...... Dont touch the dials...... You wont want to miss a single moment of the 2004 Featherlite Modified Series....… Practice and qualifying are coming up right now…...

Dick Trickle at the track ready to race.…

Practice was up and since Dick has upgraded his car so much since the last time they ran here he basically had to all over again…….. As he again spent a lot of time working on the cars setup to handle and drive just how he wanted it too……

Qualifying was up next and Dick set a great time of 12.849 to set the fastest time in qualifying……. Championship leader Jason Sulivan was 0.1 seconds behind Dick with a 12.958 to be second quickest……

Third was Francis Lee who is having a strong year……. He set a 13.186 which Joel York right on his heels with a 13.288…….. Rounding out the top five was William Anderson with a time of 13.487……...

Qualifying Results........

Dick Trickle lined up ready to start the race......

For the second week in a row Dick lead the field to the green flag for the 100 lap race……. And he got the jump he needed as the green flag waved to have the lead into turn one……. With Jason Sulivan in hot pursuit and Francis Lee also tagging along……

As per usual Joel York and William Anderson were having a good ol fight for fourth place……. York had fourth as they entered turn one……. While Anderson was in fourth when they entered turn three……..

Francis Lee made a move up the inside of Jason Sulivan entering turn three on the first lap to snatch second place……. This caught Sulivan by surprise and he fell back for a few laps as he recovered…….

Luis Rivas was down on the inside with a heavily damaged car……. He got into a wreck with another car that cause him him the outside wall hard……. And then down the track and onto the inside wall…….. He has just now managed to gt going again……. He is much slower now with that damage and hes now also many laps down on the leaders…….. That has cost him big time…...

Dick was settling into a nice love making rhythm…… And was starting to eek out a 1.5 second lead over Francis Lee…… Who had Jason Sulivan all over him like a cheap suit…….

Jason Sulivan managed to get past Francis Lee with the help of lapped traffic……. Dick was also deep in the lapped traffic and come up to lap his old friend Luis Rivas…….. Rivas was nowhere near full race pace as he nursed his heavily damaged car around the track after the collision earlier in the race that had nothing to do with Dick…….

Rivas was not going to let Dick past still holding a grudge against Dick from last week……. He was blocking Dick like a chastity belt…… And Dick had no way through without the key……

As Dick was looking for the key for the chastity belt……. Jason Sulivan had caught Dick…… And was giving him a hard time from the rear…….. Dick was now in trouble and really need to find a way around Luis Rivas……..

On lap 40 Dick tried one last time to get past Rivas but he was having none of it…….. Knowing he was going to lose the race if he did nothing…… Dick had one last look and found the key to the chastity belt……. It was the from of the old chrome horn…….

Dick got just enough to the outside of Luis Rivas to tag the right rear quarter of Rivas’s car…… And it was just enough to turn him…….. Rivas went spinning up the track and hard into the outside wall and then bounced back down onto the racing line and was t-boned by Greg Brown who was running in nineteenth place at the time…….. Chaos ensued as cars tried their best to dodge the carnage down the back straight……

Many cars had tagged the wall or another car……. There was a lot of damaged cars with many way down on pace than before with heavy damage…….. Dick did not escape unscathed as the Klipsch Modified Flaming Dick Machine got lightly tagged by Jason Sulivan and had spun down to the apron……. Just touching the inside wall and causing wheel damage……

Dick was now slightly down on pace as his wheel was out of alignment……. He lost a few spots and rejoined in fourth……. Right behind Joel York……… Meanwhile both Luis Rivas and Greg Brown had retired from the race due the damage from the crash……… And both men were headed to the medical centre for evaluation……...

Jason Sulivan was now in the lead and it looks like he has suffered no damage……. Sulivan now has a 10 second lead over Francis Lee……. Who just managed to avoid the carnage on the track……..

Dick was now not fast enough to make any moves on Joel York who had extended the gap to 1.5 seconds…….. Fifth place William Anderson was now eyeing up a fourth place as he slowly catching the damaged Dick…….

On lap 80 William Anderson had chased down Dick and was looking for a way past……. But Dick was not going to just let Anderson pass without any resistance……. The two men battled for 10 laps as Dick was determined to not get another fifth place…….

But with 10 laps to go Dick slid wide on the entry into turn three…… That allowed William Anderson to slide up the inside and get the move down……. Dick didnt fight to hard once Anderson was up the inside…… And ended up just letting Anderson go……..

Dick kept touch with William Anderson for the remainder of the race hoping Anderson would make a mistake….. But last years champion was not the type to make mistakes……..

As the chequered flag waved for the fifth time this season Jason Sulivan has won the race…….…… As he now has a good lead in the championship……. Second was Francis Lee who fought hard but was not able to claw back that 10 second gap….. Finishing 7.3 seconds behind Sulivan……

Joel York took home third place 1 lap behind the winner…….. With William Anderson and Dick rounding out the top five with both finishing 1 lap behind Sulivan…….

Race Results..…

After the race Luis Rivas was waiting for Dick in the paddock area and pounced the moment Dick got out of the car……. The two tussled while yelling obscenities at each other for a bit before Rivas threw a punch that connected with Dicks head…… Dick pushed Rivas away before doing his best Johnny Cage impersonation by ducking Rivas’s second punch and then swinging his own punch aimed at and connecting with Rivas’s…… Ahem….. Little head…..

Rivas fell to the ground clutching his groin as Dick stood over him yelling obscenities……. Finally the officials arrived separating the two and helping Rivas back to the medical centre……..

I managed to get a work with Dick after that altercation……. “Did you see what that *BEEP* *BEEP* *BEEP* *BEEP*ing *BEEP* Rivas just did to me then…… Hes laps down…… Driving like a complete *BEEP* *BEEP* *BEEP* and then when I finally do the right thing and dump him like a bad habit its all MY fault??……. He can go and get *BEEP*ed……..”

“Im sorry we couldnt crash more cars today…… We didnt fill the quota today for Dennison and the Modified Series……. If we havent crashed 50% of the field by the end of the race….. Then we need to extend the race until the crash at least 50% of the cars…… Because its not fair for these fans for them not to see any more wrecks than that and more tore up cars…… We still had over half the cars running at the end and it shouldnt be that way……”

“If we dont wreck 50% of the field then we really need to extend the race….. Because according to NASCAR thats what the fans want…… They want to see that excitement…… Im upset we didnt crash more cars for the fans…… If we could turn Dennison into a figure eight track that would be perfect…… Totally perfect……. It would be better than what we got now…… Or we run half the race in the regular direction then stop and run the other half backwards…… And with 10 to go we split the field and half go in the regular direction the other half them can go backwards……”

“Im sure NASCAR would love that…… That would guarantee that we would make the 50% crash quota they seem to want so badly………. Im sorry to the fans that I couldnt get caught up in one more wreck……. I know they would have loved that……. NASCAR can kiss my *BEEP* and suck my *BEEP*”

Well there you have it folks…… The very sarcastic words of Dick……. Dick was last seen seen talking to an engine dealer in the paddock area……...

Next week the 2004 Featherlite Modified Series heads to Richmond International Raceway……. Dick Trickle will make his debut race on a real life NASCAR circuit……. Can he finally get the win and put to bed his problems with Luis Rivas???……. Will Luis Rivas little head recover from Dicks attack or will be miss next week due to concussion???……. Can Jason Sulivan continue his winning ways???…… Can Joel York or Francis Lee get an upset win to spice up the championship race??……..

Tune in next week for the answers to all these questions and more….. Exclusively here on Left Turn Heaven……..

This is Murray Eastlake reporting for Left Turn Heaven..... And until next time its goodbye from me....

First lap Modified Dick action....

Gallop Racer

And their off and racing….. And its Rigid Rock prematurely out to an early lead followed by Sexy Master and Rigid Cowboy coming up the rear……..

Yes those are the actual horse names in the game……..

The graphics are quite nice…. The horses look like actual horses……. And the tracks are ok detailed for the time…….. Its nothing special but it does the job perfectly fine……

Sounds are ok……. Its rather sparse…… But it is horse racing…….. Not much sound going on there……. There is kinda weird jazz type music when the racing is being run…… Feels very out of place…… And the cheering music keeps going even when you lose…….

Controls are…….. well…… weird……. The horse runs on its own…… you control the speed of the hose with the dpad…….. Up on the dpad makes it run faster and down makes it run slower….. Square and Circle whip the horse on either the right or left respectively……. X switches hands and Triangle changes view……. It ummmmm works……. Its ok…….

The storyline……. Well there is no storyline again…… So I get to make it up……. w00t…… April O’Neil is on assignment looking into a rumour that there is a new mutant horse faction…… Wondering if its the same mutant ooze that created the Nina Turtles….. April races off to investigate……… But it turns out to be a trick by the Foot Clan and they have kidnapped April O’Neil……… And it is up to the Nina Turtles to rescue her…….. They track her down to the Kentucky Derby……. To get close enough to rescue April they need a disguise…….. They call on their old friend Thirty/Thirty from BraveStarr for help…… He helps to disguise the four turtles into two horses with the help of horse costumes…… Now he needs to train to Turtles to act like horses so no one will be suspicious of them…. Cue the training montage…... Now with the help of Thirty/Thirty the disguised Ninja Turtles are ready to enter the Kentucky Derby and save April O’Neil……..
*Created and Written by Stone Cold Spider 3:16 in consultation with Pengling…….

The gameplay is ok…….. Be the jockey and ride the horses to victory……… In career mode your not only the jockey but you are also the owner and trainer and breeder…… It does get quite in depth in the career mode…… Though the game itself is very very repetitive…… There really is not much to say about the gameplay…….

Overall its a nice little quirky game that does what it says on the tin……. Nothing flashy….. Nothing over the top……. It just delivers a nice horse racing simulation game….

That is why my score for Gallop Racer is a glue factory out of 10……...

Gallop Racer……..

GuliKit KingKong 2 Pro Controller

This is more if a first impressions look at the controller……. I might do a more in depth review of the controller in a few months……..

The things that stand out the most…….

The controller fits the hands really well….. The textured grips on the back felt weird at first but I got use to that in no time……

The analogue sticks feel really damn nice….. The friction rings around the edge are silky smooth…… And the face buttons have a really nice tactile feel about them……

Comes with a case to transport the controller safely….. Nothing great but it will do the job…..

The face buttons are PlayStation style flat buttons…… Not the slightly domed Xbox style….. I find the flat design to be much better on my thumb over extended periods of use…… Like when holding down the button for 20 straight minutes for a Dick Trickle race…….

The triggers are silky smooth but are much lighter than the Xbox One controller I have…… Again it will just take time to get use to it……

Plug and Play compatible….. Once the controller was set to Xinput……. EndeavourOS just saw it as a normal Xbox 360 pad and worked straight away no problems at all……..

The things that dont stand out…….

The letters on the face buttons…… They are complete shite…… They have gone for a fancy dark grey colour for the face button letters…… And they are about as visible as Chewbaccas testicles under his fur…… For an Uber 1337 MLG Pro Gamer like myself…… Its not a huge issue…… I know where A,B,X and Y are……. But for other less Uber 1337 gamers or children…… it would be an issue……. Unless you have the perfect lighting conditions you would have more luck seeing the Loch Ness Monster than seeing the letters on the face buttons…...

Where are start and select????…… This took me ages to work out….. I expected the small circle buttons in the centre to be start and select……. But no……. The start and select button are actually the + and - buttons…..

According to my consultant “The + and - buttons started with the various Wii controllers, and Nintendo kept them on all controllers since then, including the Switch Pro Controller, which the GuliKit KingKong 2 Pro Controller is based on.”……..

Overall

Overall this is a really nice controller from what little I have used it for this week…… Has worked great in WRC 10 and 8……. Was fantastic in NASCAR: Dirt to Daytona…… The dpad was really good in Gate of Doom………. Hopefully this controller holds up for months/years to come……..

GuliKit KingKong 2 Pro Controller

Next week it looks like the rain will still be here……. Its been a very wet winter…… So I dont think I will be doing much this week that involves going outside…….

As for gaming there will be more hardcore modified Dick Trickle racing action in NASCAR: Dirt to Daytona……. Getting down and dirty in WRC 10…….. And I will be on a Beetle Adventure…….

Well thats it from me…… Hope all you tuxers have a good week……

Now for my bad joke of the week……
I got fired from my job at the the bank on my very first day……. A woman asked me to check her balance……. So I pushed her over....
*ba dum.... tssssh…...*

It also has the Y/X B/A positioning like a Nintendo controller. So everything is flipped around compared to the Steam Deck which uses the X-Box button layout (X/Y A/B).

Since the writing on the buttons is so bad it really doesnt matter which way around they are.......

Also when playing on PC it uses the Xbox button layout..... So the key caps are incorrect anyway...... But im use to that since I normally use the 8bitdo SN30 Pro+...... Which has the Nintendo button layout also........

Strap in guys, this is a big post! I've been doing some driving this week, too!

Last week, I tried out Garfield Kart - Furious Racing, which I had gotten as a Fanatical freebie a while ago but put off trying because I felt that such a sleepy license might not lend itself well to a go-kart game, but I was very pleasantly surprised by how good it is! After some slight tweaks to the control mapping, this is the first game that gets the driving and drifting the most spot-on out of any of the Mario Kart-alikes I've ever tried. Granted, it's not Mario Kart, and none of these games ever are, but it's pretty good, especially for something that cost so little.

Back in March, I picked up the Humble Kart Club Games Bundle, and on Thursday I decided to have a showdown between all of the other non-Garfield mascot-karting games that I have on Steam, with the winner earning the right to be installed on my future Steam Deck for family multiplayer get-togethers*, and also being the game that I'll play this weekend. Garfield Kart - Furious Racing is, of course, included in the running, since I already tried it last week and liked it.

*Karting games are great for this, since they're so simple to pick up and are therefore also very accessible to non-gamers - everybody knows the concept of driving and of go-karts, and with simple controls consisting of a directional input and just a few buttons, just about anybody can learn to play them easily. I don't plan on installing any emulators on my Steam Deck since my GPD Win Max 2021 does that job perfectly for me, so older Mario Kart installments are out of the running here - we already had those experiences years ago, and Nintendo's unwillingness to make a proper new Mario Kart for the Switch was one of a long line of disappointments that caused me to leave them behind in the end. Now, as then, I want something new.

I'll say right off the bat that I know that none of these, with their lower budgets and smaller companies behind them, are going to be straight-up replacements for Mario Kart, but they don't need to be - they just need to be good enough for occasional family gatherings.

First up would have been All-Star Fruit Racing (Proton), where an all-girl cast of fruit-themed characters race fruit-themed vehicles through fruit-themed worlds (they really went all-in on the fruit!), but it kept crashing for me during its intro cinematic and, if I skipped that, on the main menu, so unfortunately I had to leave it out of the competition.

Second is Beach Buggy Racing 2: Island Adventure (Proton). Unfortunately, I just didn't get along with this one - I don't like the driving or the drifting (the handling wasn't to my liking with any vehicle I tried, and the drifting swings about wildly in a way that I don't like when it comes to this genre), and it wouldn't allow me to remap the controls to my liking, which is a shame as I found the default ones to be quite painful on my hands and wrists. That said, this is clearly a good game, as it's very polished and runs well - it's just not for me.

After those two came Monster League (Proton). I couldn't even get this one to start, which is a pity as it looked nice in the footage that I've seen. As I walked away from the track, I could've sworn I saw some sort of flaming machine speed by, with its driver swearing up a storm about the problems at this location...

Nickelodeon Kart Racers 2: Grand Prix (Proton) was next up. I really wanted to like this one, since I grew up with several of the shows represented therein, and it's a perfectly serviceable game - just one that's lacking here and there. The steering feels great, for example, but the drifting swings and sways too much, and the character graphics look on-point but the levels feel like they're without much personality. Worst, though, is that there's no voice-acting - not even from soundalikes. For a genre that's meant to be rambunctious, this really drains a lot out of the game, since everyone is bizarrely silent.

After that came Super Indie Karts (Native Linux). A lot about this one is absolutely right-on - you can tell that the developers know the genre! The driving, the audiovisual cues, the course designs, all of these are good, and though I didn't like the drifting (it feels too slidey for me) this isn't down to the game implementing anything wrongly - it's purely a matter of personal taste. My only gripes are that various UI elements don't seem to fit on-screen correctly in spite of my resolution being set correctly, and that, aside from the Duck Game Duck, Max from Mutant Mudds, and the kid from Teslagrad, I don't know or care about any of the characters included here, which, in the mascot-karting genre, is very much a requirement if you're using characters that weren't created specifically for your game - this prevented me from feeling connected to the action. That said, I could easily recommend this one to people as it's a very good and polished experience, and if you know the included games then it's surely a no-brainer. However, it's not my winner here, as it's not quite what I'm looking for.

Last but not least is Zeepkist (Proton). This is a physics-based soapbox-racing game, so I'm not sure why it was in a kart-racing bundle to begin with. It's really fun, and easily my favourite out of all of the games I tried on Thursday, but it can't win because it's not a kart-racer. Definitely do check it out, though!

So, my winning game, earning its spot as the kart-racer that I'll be installing on my Steam Deck, is Garfield Kart - Furious Racing (Proton), and that's the game that I'll be playing this weekend. It's a mascot kart-racing game that, not surprisingly, features Garfield and his friends, that fairly closely replicates the driving feel of the later Mario Kart games, such as Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 7, which happened to be my favourites in that series. Every character on the roster is recognisable and has short speech-clips to make sure that the racing doesn't get boring, the items are intuitive enough, and the locales are what you'd expect from a Garfield game. I've been racing with dopey dog Odie, and getting on well with him. I always was a dog person. I suspect that developer Artefacts Studio could do some great things with this genre in the future, if they were to make another license-based or original kart-racer.

This weeks progress on Alien Crush (TurboGrafx-16) sees the score hit 973,555,100 out of 999,999,990. I should be able to finish this one next week!

[+..••] Other stuff that I played this week;

Arcade Game Series: Ms. Pac-Man (Proton)

Biomutant (Proton)

Super Bomberman 3 (SNES)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge (Native Linux)

On the non-gaming but gaming-adjacent front, the next lot of Bomberman 40th Anniversary merchandise showed up for pre-order, due to ship at the end of November. This one's a set of blind-packed capsule figures, and since I like all of the options I ordered a few to see which ones I get.

Honestly, that makes me less confident about buying into any of their current products, because they might spin out something I'm interested in into a separate application. I thought that the whole point of doing it they way they did it, was so that everything was all in one place?

Controller Update.....

Just a quick post (will do a proper reply tomorrow)..... I just performed surgery on my new controller....... Not even a week and it got the quite common and dreaded sticky face button........

I followed this handy dandy youtube video and was able to fix the problem the downside of the fix is that is removes the tactile feedback of the button and now makes it a normal linier switch.............. Least they will never stick again.......
